DT License Plates????

Lets see if I grasp the concept here.
For years DT builds their fan base by putting out great music, touring and being fan friendly.
Niklas designs a great band logo. Then some rip off makes some signs, licence plates using the dark tranquillity name.
What does DT or Niklas get out of this? *nothing*
And you're sending your money to this thief.

Their fault for not having thought of this great merch oportunity ;)

No seriously.. isnt that a bit dramatic? I mean you make it sound like he was selling their daughters or something

Although the images were just done on paint from the looks of them... Chances are its not a real product and the dude is just sucking people dry of cash.

Actually, I know the guy. He's from Daytona and makes license plates for a living. In fact I have one of those things hanging in my room (for what it's worth, I traded it for some Rammstein stuff :) )

Oh come on, it's not like he sells them for 200$, they are 6.50$.
and it's not like he will get rich selling them, they are only for the DT fans, who else would buy them?

i don't see how this is relevant.

it's not that i have a strong moral standard in favor of the defense of intellectual property because i like being a dick, or because my last wisdom tooth is coming out and possibly in all the wrong places. but it's still people making a profit out of someone else's work, however small the profit or the work. personally, i don't like the idea one bit.

Oh, please, just don't act the saint like you never ever got anything counterfeit in your life or put money to it :D

It IS upsetting someone uses the name or violates copyright in ANY way, but - why noone official looked up to something like this before (even if that would cost more in the end)? I like the idea, many people have stylized license plates; looking on the bright side - there's an increased level of exposure with those tags running in the streets!

I'd leave being upset to copyright holders (if there's any real frustration present), all I know - fans WILL be happy to have such thing on a car or hanging on the wall.

Cuthalion, this guy sells under many IDs on eBay, I checked a few of them and at this time he has about 5000 items of this kind on auction. Not all but many are for different music groups he has no right to use.

The reason he found DT and his motive is quite obvious.

Yes I have and even posed the question before, you can read Niklas's response

Who is more in the wrong the person who sells
the bootleg (tshirt,CD,cassette,DVD,whatever)
or the fan who supports this, buying the bootleg item?

Definitely the bootlegger/seller himself, since he's the one profiting from the artist's work on a larger scale. Can't blame the fans for wanting to expand their collections, even if they know that some of the stuff isn't official as such.

I saw the Rammstein comment and true R+ fans, collectors detest this guy, he has taken some of them for probably $1000s, not for the above DT sort of collectable. As I R+ collector, I caught him in a big time lie or should I say I cured his amnesia.

@La Rocque: hey mofo, *get a life*

interesting. bootleg merchandise will always exist, i think it's the band's problem how they decide to face it, and that should guide their fan's actions on it.

i mean, for example when a band (i think it was brujeria) was playing in my city they ran into the millions of bootleg tshirts stickers and such merchandise people were selling outside the venue. So they confiscated everything and gave it away to their fans for free during the show. I think that's a pretty clear stance as to what they think about illegal merch.

on the other hand, another pretty big band I know was thrilled when they saw all the bootleg stuff of them, and actually went ahead and bought some cups etc for themselves, saying it was better done than the original merchandise is.

in other words... well, i prefer original stuff to the bootlegs, even if bootlegs are cheaper. if bands don't bring their own tshirts to sell at concerts though, i'll buy one of the bootleg ones. if I knew my favourite band had a problem with it, i'd definitely think it twice. if they shrug it off knowing there's not much they can do about it really, well...

That's pretty peculiar though.. why should your opinion on illegal merch depend on the band's opinion? Either you're ok with it or you're not. Why does the band's opinion play a role in the way you weigh the deed morally?
