rented Three... Extremes from netflix, watched it last night.
a really impressive collection of films
Dumplings- I was worried the truth behind the dumplings would ruin the experience if this was shown in a sort of twist ending, but thankfully it wasn't the case. Whereas most films would use this plot point as the climax of the story, in this case it wasn't it, it built around all that, so knowing ahead of time did not particularly do any harm. This is my first experience with Fruit Chan's work, but I thought the short was nice, albeit the weakest of the 3, imo. (too straightforward? perhaps the knowledge of such did affect me.....)
I noticed later that there's a disc of 'bonus material' for this film also on netflix. Rumor has it the full-length Dumplings is on the bonus materials disc, though it doesn't seem to be advertised as such, suprisingly. Regardless.. it's in the rental queue. I've been told the ending of the each version differs.
now as for the other two..
Cut- oh man, Chanwook Park, you're amazing. This short is built on the same theme he's been all over lately, revenge. Though instead of sticking to the straight up revenge format through to the end, it distorts into being a nightmarish breakdown, of which I'm still not sure if I've deciphered the entire story. Undoubtedly my favorite on here. Visually incredible.
Box- Miike's submission of the 3. If I had to rank my interest in each short beforehand, this one would have been at the bottom. After the hype of Dumplings, and being really eager for something new from Park, this one seems to have slipped through all the reviews, and I hadn't heard it mentioned too much in regards to the film. I was mostly unsure as to the quality of this work while watching it, but it tied together nicely at the end and really made for a pleasant experience.
