Hey,

So I have this metal band I'm going to be recording and I have been listening to The Devil Wears Prada and noticed that the guy who recorded them "Joey Sturgis" uses a lot of effects such as bass drops, and certain parts cutting out to create that cutting in and out effect and other things. I was just wondering if anyone knows how or has tips on how to achieve these sounds?

You mean how the vocals kind of fade in and out? First off you just need a basic audio editing software if you're looking for something free I would reccomend ACID Xpress, by sony it's the freeware version of ACID, and if you have money to spend I would get the full version of ACID, if you are looking to produce the stuff yourself, on that note before I even get into effects I have to say that if you want to record and produce you're own stuff it will be a lot of money, you have to do a lot of research on recording the mics, setup, angles, volume levels, how to use a mixing board, recording in appropriate rooms ect. ect... assuming you're aware of that though just grab either one of those programs and then to me it sounds like (though i don't really listen to the band jsut looked up one of their songs really quick) he either uses a volume pan that goes up and down (If you don't know whwat a volume pan is jsut use the ACID interactive tutorial thing) on the actual vocal track and it also sounds like he is using 2 vocal tracks one witha very slighty higher semitone and one witha slighty lower semitone than the original vocal track and he's only paning one of the tracks volumes or it could be that hes panning which speaker it going from I can't really tell with this laptop but that's a pretty safe place to start
