Somehow this flew under my radar, but consider me blown away after one listen.

Elder is a stoner/doom metal band. I know that's an easy genre to groan over. And no doubt stoner doom deserves some of the pot shots thrown at it, what with its obsession with weed culture and oftentimes overly simplistic blues riffs. Forget that. Elder has flipped the script, and this album they came out with last year is a monumental slab of progressive metal that still retains some of that stoner/doom fuzziness and heaviness. But this is a guitar album through and through, and the open-minded prog fan should appreciate this.

All three Elder discs are great! "Dead Roots Stirring" was my introduction to the band and I picked up the debut shortly thereafter. When "Lore" came out I was immediately blown away by some of the riffs on the disc. I believe it was on my year end best of list on here. Definitely stonerific but there is so much going on that you hear new things each time you listen.
