EMG81 18V mod

Ok guys here the thing.

QUESTION:

Those who have EMG81 on 18 Volts. Does your DI signal get clipped when you record if you play really hard, even though the soundcard doesn't show a clip signal? (let's say if the strings are really close, but not too close, not kissing the strings)


QUESTION 2:

Those who have EMG on 9 Volts......Same question as before

No it doesn't clip, and my EMG's got 24V.

You should stick to one thread dude, or you most likely won't get any help
It's hard to help you with your problem if you have 3-4 different threads regarding the same issue..

the things that came to mind:

Check list:
-guitarcable (mega fail)
-Does this happen to both pickups?(if you have two emg's)
-Check if your "soundcard" settings are right and that you have no effects enabled. Try plugging in another guitar
-Batteries - new, yes, but are they good?
-Installation: soldering joints, check that your connections are following the diagram for your setup.
-Get a new soundcard and have a tech look at your pickupwiring (if you've installed emg's before you would know that the shield of the signal-wire is soldered on the back of the volume-pot, and that would be hard on the plastic shit you were asking about putting in in the other thread).

Why would it clip on 18 volts if the headroom is increased?

Ok take it easy dudes.

THe reason I'm asking is because my guitar still clips the signal on 18V!!

Switched the guitar cable.

Tried my guitar on different soundcard.

Checked the wiring, and all the soldered stuff and wires.

THEN I checked potentiometers aka pots. And the resistance (R) on pots is like this.

Pot1 and pot2: - turned all the way left 17,7 KOhms (0 on the right)
- turned all the way right 25 KOhms (Oon the left)

POT 3 is 26,4 Ohms all the way right or left and 0 on the oppostite side of course.

This is the last weird thing cause I guess the should be

right(25,0) left(0,25)


Any don't call me a noob 'cause even the damn tech dooesn't know what to say ....!!!

Did you de-solder the wires before you try to measure their resistance? Or atleast disconnect the pickup(s)..
The values you're getting doesn't sound too bad though, we're talking low impedance here..

If your tech can't figure this out - take it to smarter tech. To be honest, this sounds like complete user failure. Most likely you have your wiring jacked (you sure you are actually running 18v - and not 9v w/ 2x battery life), or you have a defective pickup.

I'm much more inclined to to choose the former, as I've never heard this before from the COUNTLESS people who've done the 18v mod.

yeah my output signal is too strong or too weak. Even on 9V it clipped as fuck. It's interesting that only the upper part of the signal was cut. It was like ---------------- a line of cut peaks.

my guitar was made and installed in the factory I didn't do the wiring myself.... Now after noticing the problem I rewired everything and added 18V mod. It's better but still clippping. My output must be too strong or too weak.

How can I check if the pickups are fucked up? They're workin...I'd like to measure something with multi meter but I don't know where...Maybe on that quick connect wire?

If you don't like the 'signature EMG tone', go for it. I'm gonna be sticking to 9v for sure. I like my shit compressed.

Noisy? Should be the same or less I'd imagine actually... more headroom, less compression, less bringing the noise up to signal level... But that's just me, anyone is welcome to straighten me out though.

I much prefer the sound of the 81 at 18 volts, it softens that upper-midrange peak the 81 at 9v has that really contributes to the sterile sound IMO (moreso than the compression, but the 18v mod helps that too ). I posted comparison clips in this thread
