EMG81 18V mod

None that I'm aware of :( What I've been doing for my recording is taking off the back plate cover, taping two batteries together, and then taping them inside the lower cutaway, with this harness dangling and connected to the battery jack in the cavity - bootleg, but it works for recording! (and for live, I just run it at 9v)

I remember the picture of this harness, I'll make one too before my friend comes over for recording. :D Thanks man!

EDIT : Now I can't wait to see if the Toneport just sucks for recording or if it's my guitar that really sucks... or both.

OK I posted a pic of my DI. It's in the right corner, as you can see (ugly and compressed TOO MUCH). This was recorded on 9V. Now other seem ok, but that are marcus's.

Now what do you think ey? Sucks ey? On every sound card I try my guitar I get the same shit, even tried it on reaper and cubase and still clipping as fuck. On 18V it looks better but still some peaks are clipped, if I play very hard all of them are clipped.:waah:

Wow, that does look really bad dude - all I can say is find a place to take the guitar in and just get professionally set up and rewired, why keep trying to fuck with it yourself? At least then, if it still doesn't work, you know the problem is somewhere else; I know the Layla is supposed to be a good interface, but things can break!

Yeah....really looks bad....IT affects the sound really hard... I tried to lower the pickups and it was better, but they were like in line with the body. :(

I bet the capacitor or the pots are messing with me....I posted some measurements in my other thread EMG81 pots. I also removed the capacitor from the pot but it still clipped, so I guess I have to solder on a new one to see if it's relly broken......and change all the pots....If that doesn't fix the thing...it's the pickups.....but the tech said if the pickups were broken I wouldn't get any sound out.....

Dude, why do you keep fucking with it yourself? Just have your tech wire it up for two pickups, one toggle switch, and one volume pot (who the hell needs a tone pot for metal anyway)

I soldered them straight to output and still get the sound clipped....But I guess now that it's not even the pickups that are broken. Nothing's broken...

You see I have two EMG81 on my guitar and they both clip. Now it would be weird that both were broken... MY guitar I a massive one and heavy too so I guess these EMG81 sound even more strong on it and conseqentualy clip the signal... (it's a resonance thing)

What do you think?

But too be shure I need to perform one last test. What if the QUICK-CONNECT cable is fucked. or If the pickups are not connect to this cable right.

Post a clip with 18V.

My DI:s look pretty much like yours, don't know if its normal, only have 1 guitar with EMG:s. I pick pretty hard though.

This is only for the bridge pickup(81), my neck(89) doesn't clip like that.

I'd say this isn't related to the pickups at all. I don't know the exact problem, but I don't think it's the pickups.

It's the preamp in the pickup itself that is clipping IF it is indeed the pickup. Both 18 and 9 volts I think can clip, at least it sounds like it. But, it takes a LOT more to make the 18 volt clip than it does the 9. Something is telling me its the signal chain or something though. What do the DI tracks look like with any other guitar without the EMG's?

It is the Emg pickups that clips, in my case I have recorded DI:s with a different guitar with passive pickups and they do not clip.

But who cares if it clips, I like the sound and thats whats most important. If you don't like it get another pickup, stop just looking at the waves and use your ears instead.
