Emo to be made Illegal in Russia YAAS!

Probably cos for the most part we are acceptable members of the human race, metalheads are just out for a good time, whats the point of a group whos not into that?

[brummies, austrians and pirates are at times also considered acceptable... smee too]

Metalheads are usually the most stupid arseholes on the planet...

I've met more arsehole metalheads than arsehole emos.

Gavin has a point. Emos can have smug scene/hipster mentalities occasionally but in the realm of metalheads there are far more people who are abrasive wankers, deliberately. Far more pretentious cunts, I mean, I consider myself pretentious at times but offending/alienating people is only a side-effect, not my actual aim as with some people. I guess because it's an extreme style and so you correlate that with people who are at the peripheries of the personality spectrum, some good, some bad.

Besides, this topic came up on another forum and firstly, they say it's a ban on emo/goth (and do we expect people in government to differentiate from that and metal?), and secondly it's supposedly a complete hoax. It'd never pass through. It'd be a stupid rule anyway, this is more "yay I h8 emos!" shite. The government's clearly trying to mould it's youth to "acceptable" terms, metalheads are as much a deviation from that as anyone, and in Russia there's no music subculture that's more against the ethos of the current government, because NSBM is more popular over there than anywhere and have links to the skinheads who are actually planning some sort of coup in their millions. However, the Duma has a few National Socialists in it's ranks so it's not really as driven underground over there and there's less of a ban on that sort of thing as there is in Germany. Post-Soviet Russia is a fascinating, complicated (if somewhat frightening) place.

Gavin speaks the truth. Metal fans are generally just as tedious as any other adolescent social group. Anybody who refers to himself as a "metalhead" immediately identifies himself as a contemptible dunce. ;)

And obviously, anything that encroaches on anybody's civil liberties is A Bad Thing. Besides, it's just a draft of a bill that almost certainly won't be passed.

Why do people care so much?

Metalheads dress equally stupid and usually act far worse.

I find pretty much the opposite to be true. In my experience, most metalheads are just laid back generally happy people. Most of them don't dress silly except for the ones who insist on wearing craploads of metal and spikes and just otherwise going overboard with it. Normal metalhead attire is long hair (just long, not generally styled into some ridiculous shape), a band t-shirt, and jeans (or maybe camo pants/shorts)... maybe some piercings and/or tattoos. Emo kids, however, are almost always pricks who dress ridiculously (to me they look like they grab random clothes from their sister's room and their grandma's attic and randomly put them together to make outfits), have gender inappropriate hair that looks silly anyway, and who tend to just have this ridiculous, smug, whiny outlook on everything.

Of course this isn't ALWAYS the case. I've known emo kids who are decent people and metalheads who are complete assholes, but generally, in my experience, metalheads are laid back fun loving people, and emo kids are dramatic, vain, ridiculous pricks.

In any case, though, it shouldn't be illegal to dress a certain way... even tough part of me would like to make an exception here.

I've had a similiar experience, the only "metalheads" that I've found to be arseholes are the metalcore faggots, and hell they're practically the same as emos anyway.

Of course, people who are laid back and happy don't spend inordinate amounts of their time banging on about "the emos", "poseurs" or "the scene". ;)

I do feel for the generation of kids who are going to have Emo Grandads, mind you.

Oh, I don't count the hardcore/metalcore kids as metalheads. To me they're just as bad. They're the same thing. They even dress similarly! Every time I see some kid hardcore dancing, I want to march in there and punch them in the head.

Just because a group of people is predisposed to a good temperament doesn't mean they don't get peeved by stupid people :p I do tend to get turned off by excessive talk of "posers" though. I've disliked that word since high school.

:worship:

There's worse than some kids with strange hair. Like we never had a "rebellious" time when we were 15 years old.

But of course, metalheads are totaly acceptable (and also happy and laid back) when they burn churches.

"Poser" is a stupid word, "false" is better :D You can define that easier too, people who lap up MTV/Kerrang/Metal Hammer perceptions of metal. Plenty such people are my friends though, it just frustrates me that they're not keen on exploring.

Yes indeed. And the most favourable metal fans I have met, don't define themselves as a product of their subculture. I'm a part of this subculture (if at all) because I love the music and other fans are generally of the same bent as me.

have gender inappropriate hair that looks silly anyway

Back when our parents were young, people said that about normal long hair. Any kind of attack on one subculture favouring another is always based on some value system. Part of tolerance for other subcultures for me, is being aware that one's distaste for this and that about other groups is down to one's value-system (e.g. that long hair is cool and side parting is not). Subjective thing, basically.

If you want to meet some real arsehole metalheads, black metal probably has the greatest concentration of them, and it's more or less my favourite style of metal and the better half of it is the most thoughtful style of metal and thinks outside simple subcultural terms. A lot of people are still generally nice but it is known for being populated with people who are very difficult and certainly not as approachable as the average metal fan. Fortunately, for the most part, the only people really intent on giving you a hard time or making you uncomfortable just do it on the internet. And when you meet them in person they're these unimpressive losers with this Beavis-style snigger who are either quiet as a mouse or just trying to wind people up. That or neurotic and unemployed for psychological health reasons.

For me being laid back makes things pleasant but it's not the whole story for me, sometimes it's good to meet a slight dickhead who's actually got something to say. As long as they're not out to make people uncomfortable or play some petty game of one-upmanship, I don't mind. Not to say being thoughtful and being pleasant are mutually exclusive. It's just, y'know, if you're only into gossip and watching adultswim stuff, I'm not really interested and they'll show little interest in me.

BTW, church-burning doesn't really happen nowadays, because it only caused more determination from the church-going community. And in this country and time, community is exactly what's lacking and so destroying a church (despite my qualms about abrahamic religions) is the last thing I'd do if I were nuts as such.

And all emos are stupid?

When I see chavs, smackheads, heroin addicts and the like, I know that petty subcultural differences pale in significance. Emos (some of whom are my friend despite differences in taste) at worst are a sign of spineless consumerism (only so many metal fans can truly claim to be anything better tbh), chavs and the like are a sign of genuine decay.

While I fully agree that metal fans and emos can be equally pretentious wankers, there's just no escaping the fact that emos make a better sound when you kick them in the balls. I reckon its the tight trousers, myself.

After meeting some of the people we've met on the road...

I can say with certainty that metal heads are just as big/bigger arseholes than any emos i have ever met :)

And all emos are stupid?

I think you missed some of what I said earlier. Your statement implied that a very very small minority within the subculture was accurate of all or at least most of it. I was saying that the majory of another subculture was a representation of the majority of that subculture (again, in my experience).

Good point. But look at it!

Also a good point. I guess if you start subdividing the metal fans into the more subgenre specific groups, you do get genres whose main enthusiasts are closed minded elitist pricks more often than not, largely in the more extreme genres. It's difficult trying to have conversations with a lot of them.

I guess it varies depending on location, because while I don't doubt what you're saying in regards to your own experiences, mine have been drastically different.
