I watched that Joe baresi interview a couple of weeks ago. very cool guy and he has done some classic stuff that I used to love when I was younger(I still do but listening and loving music isn't the same anymore.it's an agething)

He said something about putting a eq at the 2buss raising the bass.
And that's something that I picked up.

When you get a mix there's always somethings that I do first. Edit minor stuff that's to obvious. Cut out toms. HP out some 40-100hz on individual instrument.

At this stage the mix often sounds a bit wimpy. No strong bass.
To much lowmid and splashy highs.

Put a good eq(Pultech style) with a +3(depnds on mix) shelving filter at 60Hz.
I found out that this does not only makes the bass and kick thunderous without affecting the eqphase since you put it across the 2buss.
You now don't have to cut out as much lowmid as well.

This technique works very well for me and I don't have to eq the individual tracks as much.
if the mix sounds dull- try raise the uppermids-highs. or cut out something.
Maybe you shouldn't go nuts but try for yourself.
