How do u guys feel about using some eq on master channel? Kinda feels wrong, but right now also very tempting as a fast way to remove some excess mids from a couple of songs..

Do whatever sounds good. With that said, I agree with the guys that if you need to make more than a 3 db move, fix it in the tracks themselves.

never on the 2 bus. i got yelled at a few times working in real studios before i know what i was really doing.................

always as in insert on the ind. track,or in the mastering process.... sometimes parallel on a group but never on teh master fader...

I've gotten the impression that it's better to fix it in the tracks themselves, if you need to do anything more drastic than a dB or two.

Unless you're compressing "through" on a mix, it's best not to touch (physically, and plugin wise) the master fader (or output faders).

EQ is done in mastering, and will normally ever really be more than 3dB (in my experience).

Not sure what studio that was, but that is pretty ridiculous. CLA,TLA,wallace, randy staub, and just about every other mixer uses EQ on the 2 bus. Out of the dozens of producers/engineers I've worked with the last few years, ranging from big names to nobody's...I'd say 85% of them used EQ on the 2 Bus....it's nothing to get yelled at for.

im gonna keep there names hidden away for my sake, but they got a few grammys laying around.

there are no rules in audio anyways,if it sound good then its OK

i always leave the eq off the 2 bus. it allows the The mastering engineer to make a better make decision for final eq. with a better monitoring system... cla tla wallace and also work in multimillion dollar rooms, not bedrooms and basements as most of the people here do asking questions, as well as having done 1000s of mixes to know exactly what that eq on the 2 bus is doing .......

Ive layed off boosting too many lows on the master and adding that onto the bass itself, really cleans shit up and allows the snare to come through. Got a bit of a 1k cut for that Devildriver style scoopy mid tone.

im my opinion, using eq on master bus depends on how you mix, or master, whatever the case.

i always use an eq on my master bus, unless my mix compensates for it.

i have a standard setup of 4 "magical" mastering eq's i use from q-clone.

also depends on the music, some styles sound dumb when you're cutting low mids for clarity.

Probably some Massive Passive clone patches. I have an IR of a HP/LP running on my 2bus.

I used to have some pretty nasty stuff going on in my 2bus (sometimes using more than one eq :erk: ). Now I've cut that down to a comp, the Manley IR, multiband, and limiter. Life is much better. :)

It helps to do a hi and lo shelf with pulltec before you start mixing in some projects.. most of the time thats what your doing on individual channels so why not do it right away on the master before going at individual tracks :)

So basically you're saying that if you're working in a multimillion dollar room and you know your shit then it's ok to use eq on the 2 bus? But otherwise you shouldn't use it?

Not being sarcastic, just it's not clear since you didn't really finish that last sentence.

I read somewhere that it is good to have small bass boost on 2buss because it causes less phase shifts than if you are boosting lows on individual channels... I never tried this so I dont know :)
