With their first 3-track demo CD-R out, it's time to introduce the six-piece band Estrum from Austin, TX. I was really surprised when I first heard samples of the three songs ('Abiosis', 'Yours' and 'Narcolepsy'): shades of The Gathering, Riverside or (a bit further downstream) Evanescence, and brilliant musicianship to boot. The overall atmosphere is one of melancholy, counterpointed by fine guitar work, both in the riffing and soloing department.
Vocalist Zena McKelvy really makes a difference here, lending her voice to complex song structures/melodies that are never less than gripping. All songs are on an equally high quality level and have a spacey quality to them.
