European Concerts db Regulation

I'm doing FOH again on Cynic's European tour (starting next week) so I don't want to make them sound average because I'm following the French rule (105db max) while they could sound much better at 110 (this is for smaller venues where the sound from the stage is proportionally too loud compared to the PA - we won't have the problem for Wacken and others festivals).

Hey, maybe we'll meet at Wacken then, hehe. I'll do sound for Watain.

brett, stop being a freak and mix it like a man!
Somehow I do believe that standing on my opinion and wanting not to hurt the audience (by hiding my lack of mixing abilities behind a wall of painful volume) is behaving like a man. :D
A concert may sound bad or Ok, that's not the end of the world. But not irremediably damaging people's audition is what really matters to me. Moreover, it will sound better for everyone if people don't have to wear earplugs (lot of people do now), losing all the high frequencies, so for that, the volume must be reasonably low. That being said, it's usually pretty hard not to go over 105db.

Oh cool! Unfortunately Cynic plays on Friday and Watain on Saturday. I so hope we'll be at Wacken by Thurday night to see Maiden!!!

Great, now I'll know who to blame if Cynic has bad sound at Wacken. :p
On the other hand, now I'm actually a little more optimistic that they'll sound good. ;)
Oh, don't be... really don't ;)

yeah but that has nothing to do with european db regulation. Are you telling me french ears are more sensitive than german ones?

Brett come on just turn it up a little bit. Unless theres is a limiter in place on the system that cuts power ( like you can find over here) just do whatever till it sounds good. Dont mix it with meters do it with your ears. Basically do it your way unless the house tech tells you otherwise and then still do it your way..

You work for the band not the audience or the local authorities so just make them sound as good as you can with the system youve got. Also metal shows arent meant to be quite. REAL MEN PLAY ON 10!!!

If audience member find the level uncomfortable thats for them to decide. They can put plugs in, move back or go to the bar. Just dont worry so much and remember its your show..

You want me to come down and start you off? :kickass:

'A concert may sound bad or Ok, that's not the end of the world' You should have seen the conversation I had with a certain guitarist after a show in Germany when the monitor system had a mind of its own!!

( see I managed to say all that without once telling you not to be such a gay about it)

Actually I just remembered when I did sound for a band called Switchblade a couple of years ago. It's unfair to compare them to SunnO))), but in lack of something else... Basically, it's a band that needs a really fat sound. They play loud on stage and I added in the PA, and everything just sounded PERFECT, I was very satisfied.

So then, AFTER I finish the sound check, the guys have gone off stage and I've marked all the settings and packed my stuff to go have something to eat, some guys from the venue come up to me and tell me that it was way too loud and that they would be shut down if there was an inspection. Yeah, thanks for not telling me sooner!

It worked out really well though; I pulled down the master fader a bit and it still sounded like it should. Could have been much worse...
