Even Henry Rollins gets it...

It’s also about humility; being open-minded to take on criticism because, at the end of the day, it’s our peers who are our best judge, not ourselves.

It would seem that Mr. Rollins here doesn't realize that there ARE DJs who can do exactly what he's describing in a very technical, musical manner that transcends stupid sound effects and ripped off samples. Also, a good number of these DJs create their own samples and music to mix, so in essence all he's doing here is generalizing and making a blanket statement that really isn't even that funny to begin with.

I agree with him that a lot of the shit is retarded and completely talentless, but in my opinion it's no different than someone playing terrible guitar driven music with only two power chords and getting famous for it. Every single type of music has it's elite class, it's good class, it's bad class, and it's utter shit class. Making fun of any of them is just getting old and not funny any more at this point.

Was this a comedy performance or a spoken word type deal? It was honestly hard to tell. I'm hoping it was the latter because if he's trying to be funny here... :erk:

i recommend to watch every Henry Rollins vid on youtube, he is a major influence in my life

yeah it actually takes a lot of work to do some of the shit they do, finding and or creating the sounds they samples is quite hard, i would say quite a few of them are excellent producers, i was introduced to NERD not too long ago and i liked the music but was really surprised that live they play everything, there keyboardist are not only using NICE synths mind you, but are also quite talented, they play the same thing over for quite a few measures but they are endlessly tweaking knobs to achieve the sounds they are doing, i.e filter control, pitch knobs for a glide effect, envelopes etc. they are also quite good at getting the right mixes since most of they're synth sounds are in the high frequency and there drums are in the low freuency and they do a good job of keeping both frequencys in check and not making it clip.

but then there are people like my friend who see vids of people like kanye and try to emulate them but getting a set-up and having it pretty much make the album for you, he doesn't seem to realize that he wont be making his own beats unless he knows ATLEAST the basics of subtractive synthesis and sequencing/MIDI work. He also thinks that Pro Tools is the best DAW and all the other ones suck just because big studios use it... it's a pretty small percentage that Rollins is talking ab00t.

but i AM afraid for the future, i will go to guitar center and look at keyboards and the dude will come over and ask if i need help and try to show me all this stuff they are are implementing on the new keyboards that automates everything, NO explanation of the effects engine, or the synth engine. Just how AWESOME the arpeggiator and sample playback are, i wish i had been around in the 70's, 80's when it used to be all about the sounds you could make, and not the samples it can playback to make music into microsofts fucking songsmith.

EDIT: oh look im dead winter.

spoken word type deal?
Im guessing thats what it was since i dont recall Rollins ever doing any sort of comedy. I would suspect a hyperbole spoken word segment. There are some DJs who do know how to actually create but i think he was more or less referring to the "rave/house" style guys. *shrugs*

who is a punk rocker to call a DJ talentless.. he shits on techno for sampling the same thing over and over, yet thats what punk rock is. the same 3 or 4 chords over and over. The only difference between techno and punk is that a techno song is six minutes and a punk song is two.

Henry Rollins should concentrate all of that hate into an attempt at pulling his head out of his ass.

I was gonna say the same thing. I'm not the type to break a lance for modern pop music, but in between all the shit, there's good musicians.

As for his spoken word stuff, he alternates between sheer brilliance and overdramatic wankery.
