I bought a pair of these 3 days ago. There is very little info on this particular version so I thought I'd share what I have found
I was planning on checking out some Fostex pm 1 which are 6.5 inch near fields going for half retail price atm. The Fostex pm 1 sounds a hell of a lot like the KRK rp5 I was coming from, just a little more realistic on the bottom end and a little crisper on the highs but still a great buy at $499 down from $899
The Event 20/20's were only $690 a pair so I went with them (normally quite a bit more). They seemed to have amazing mid frequency detail, no harshness and good low mid range.
After using them for 3 days I have noticed a few great and not so great things. They have a very consistent frequency response when changing volumes so mixing on low is very possible. They have much more detail than the other low/mid price options excluding the yamaha hs 80s and 50s and really do offer considerable improvement over someone farmiliar with the KRK rokit series. They really let you hear the transients and reverb tails and have a very wide sweet spot, I can move my head around comfortably without the sound shifting dramatically. I can hear basslines in songs I never noticed before. The murkiest mudiest albums sound clear in the low end, which I actually think will be an issue because it wont foce me to work hard enough in getting clarity down there.
The worst thing I am finding is the way they represent distorted guitars. This is a big problem, but still much better than most offerings in this price bracket. The problem is that almost all distorted guitars sound similar. I jumped back and forth from Mudvayne TEOATTC which has very little high mids and Tool's Lateralus which is much more open sounding, to Reload, Make yourself by Incubus and a few others and the guitars all sound very similar. There would be moments in the songs where the guitar is heard on its own and in those instances you could easily pick out the tone, but once it was part of a full mix the guitars just become a crunchy 3k fizz.
I think they are somewhat similar to the Yamaha hs80s, but they have their own thing going on. For the price I got them I'm very happy, but they have a habit of making everything sound good, the mid detail is to flattering and the bass always sounds clear even when the mixes don't sound that way on other systems. Probably would have gone for the yamaha hs80 if they were the same price
