so after over 4 months my band is finally nearing completion of our new EP that we're hella proud of. this is the first anyone will hear it, cause i love the shit out of this forum.

it took about 400 gallons of beer and twice as many nugs; and some serious pitfalls but we're getting there and i wanted to share what we have so far.

drums are 100% real, no samples anywhere. recorded in shabby unfinished basement on my trusty SJC acrylic kit. this is my first project with my new mac pro and i can say i'm 110% happy with how it's worked out, i'm an advocate for (higher end) apple products after this experience.

here's some tracks! all feedback welcome, i want this heard on as many sets of speakers as possible so feel free to comment on any aspect of this mix/master. there's minimal/no post production on this, we still have a bunch of fine editing to do but we're over the harder stuff.

anyway here's the songs:

Not gonna lie this sounds pretty good. I have to listen to it quietly right now cause it's almost three in the morning, but from what I hear this is SOLID! And drums aren't sampled? No way haha, this sounds amazing. Could you fill me in on a little of what you did with drums?

Good job man.

All elements sound great snr has maybe to much room/verb. but this is missing glue. This style of music needs A LOT more bass guitar though. otherwise, very nice work man!

thanks man! what you saying with 'glue'? you mean the mix doesn't glue together quite right? i think we're on the same page here, i haven't mastered properly yet; just stuck it through the maxim plugin and some EQ. any recommendations? i'm still working on the bass a little, it's right volume wise but isn't fat enough. that'll be tomorrow's task!

picklesnatcher, thanks a million! really appreciate the kind words. here's a little rundown of the drum setup:

pg52 on kick, sm57s on snare/toms. mxl 993s on overheads, and an ADK a-51 about 6 feet in front of the kit as a room mic. didn't really experiment much with mic placement etc as we had no point of reference or any idea how the room would sound. OHs were loosely placed in a sort of X/Y diagonal formation, if that makes sense.

the room we recorded in was pretty big, just an average janky unfinished basement. we didn't do any sound treatment as we had to move out right after recording, not even any carpets or anything.

there's nothing special on the drums, just loads of waves API 2500 comp and 560 EQ chained in various combinations on everything individually, with a little of each on a 2 parallel buses. trillium lane verb, and a bit of the BF76 bombfactory plug that comes free with protools LE on snare/OHs

everything was tracked with a focusrite octopre.
