Damn, I've listened to the song a few times now. Really getting into it. Can't wait to hear the full EP and album.
Let me guess, you used Doomsday Machine and The Gathering for reference? :p
Whatever you used, keep using it. It's gooood! Slightly over gained guitars, but they seem to work in the mix, so not too bad, but those vocals are really well produced and mixed dude!

Sounds great, only slight problem I have is the snare seems too dry/sticks out too much. Guitars sound great, as do the vox, and everything else hehe.

Cheers guys. I agree totally about the guitar sound. I self-admittedly screwed that one up. I had quite a high fever when we were doing the rhythms, so I don't know if that played any part in it, but I suppose it could have. I can barely remember anything from all the meds I was on, haha. The biggest consolation in that regard though is that the guitars do work with the mix in the end, so it's not all bad.

@Neb: My biggest reference was 'This Godless Endeavor'.

@jhakwe: The windows theme is 'RoyaleVista 1.52'

EDIT: In regards to that vocal sound... the band's drummer is an engineer at a local studio which has hoarded some of the best engineering gear available to man... the vocal chain was kept extremely high quality, and that is likely contributing to you guys liking the vocal sound! The plug-ins used on that one are Waves Desser, Waves C1 comp and Waves SSL EQ to boost some airy highs and throaty high-mids.

Thanks for posting the hi-res version!

Overall, I like it. I love the immediacy of the vocals. Very effective. What mic was it?

Guitars are a little hashy for my tastes.. & I really don't dig the snare too much either.... but, I think it's just different philosophies & influences.... ....strictly my own opinion here. Don't read too much into it. :)
It's a very clean, very aggressive mix & you've achieved something to be proud of.

cheers for the props ermz...
must say the mastered versions have come up really well (ermz, the engineer describes the mastered tracks sounding very "glued" but noted the lack of bass guitar hehe) will get you a copy next time we meet..

the vocals on weight of redemption were tracked with a tlm103 -> ula 2108 -> distressor...

glad you guys have liked it and all props to ermz for the rescue job on the mix

cheers

BTW Troy, I didn't mean to make it sound like I thought this entire thing was a salvage job or anything. All things considered (especially the fact that it was your first studio job) the core sounds were definitely still there, but they just took a little more to bring out than usual. I think the fact that it was tracked over such a large period of time didn't help... but the end result speaks for itself!

I'm gonna hopefully get myself an amp before the end of the year so I can practice pulling rhythm sounds here and cut down on the time it takes, plus prevent any potential problems when I'm with a band in a studio. Hopefully save everyone some time and money, as well as get some better sounds!

yeh the tlm worked well just had to really watch that julz didn't get too close, about 2 feet back was the sweet spot.. the cleans on burnies were done with the SE gemini, seems to cut the "whinging 14yo sound" from his voice nicely..

oh and dont stress bout the "salvage job" stuff for my first real tracking job and the fact that the whole recording process cost us about 1/5 of what the local bands have paid to acheive lesser results well the e.p. speaks for itself..
