As much as I hate programmed drums I have now realized that I need something for laying ideas down quickly and pre prod. Now I know Superior is much better but is EZdrummer usuable for metal? At $75 it is very tempting. Or are there cheaper/free options I should check out?

Get metal machine!! It's amazing. I actually just bought the crossgrade to SD for $100 on ebay, which I recommend getting for the long-term because it has a lot more features. But seriously, metal machine sounds fantastic. And as everyone else said, you have to buy EZD first, then metal machine (although you might be able to find combo sales).

A decent route to take is to find someone with an EZDrummer Lite license they have no need for - quite a few OEM products include a license for Lite that people don't use, I've given two away in the last several years, then do the upgrade to EZDrummer for $40 (you will find it at several online sites for that price). That will get you started, after which you can get Metal Machine as recommended and then wait for one of the sales to do the upgrade to SD. Key thing with Toontrack products - never ever pay the full price - you will always see several sales a year where the prices are much more reasonable.

I have Superior Drummer and the Metal Machine expansion, If you are going to be mixing more more metal type stuff, I recommend MM, but if you are going to be mixing rock/metal I much rather prefer NY Avatar.

Could you link me to that dude? Is cheaper than any price I've managed to find.

As far as just getting ideas down, I've heard nothing but good from EZDrummer/Metal Machine. The tones are apparently great right out of the box, as well!

This. Metal Machine is totally worth it. It comes with several kits that fit a bunch of different styles.

Audiodeluxe on ebay has a ton of toontrack stuff and it is usually on sale with different package deals and whatnot. Good service too.
