Face Off 4: Opeth vs. Meshuggah

You knew this one was coming! Or not ... Picked these two in particular because they're probably the two most cited bands in metal today.

As many of you know I'm no Meshuggah fanboy to say the least so ofc I picked Opeth. Considering the board we're on I'd say Opeth has a home court advantage, but we'll see how they stack up anyhow.

Opeth of course. But the two share almost no musical commonalities. The other faceoffs seemed to have bands that sound very similary - Megadeth and Metallica - In Flames and DT - Dream Theater and Pain of Salvation... Not sure how I feel about this one, no offense.

Like I said, I picked them because they're probably the two most influential bands in metal today. Considering this is a Katatonia forum instead of favorites I should have asked which has had a bigger impact. In that case I'd unfortunately have to go with Meshuggah.

Yep. A ton of big name bands have cited them as a huge influence like Metallica, Tool, Deftones (Stef even had a sig 8 string made), Porcupine Tree (ofc Opeth have had an influence on Steve as well, and vise versa) etc. etc. You know a band is influential when you walk in a music store, and they're carrying 8 string guitars all of the sudden. I Picked the 8 string up, and this 60 year old dude working there said "Meshuggah", and gave me the horns. It was pretty funny actually.


These are direct unmistakable influences.

Where are all the Meshuggah fans that came out in droves when I asked how people felt about them? Guess you can't stop the Opeth round these parts. I almost wonder how well they'd fair against Katatonia ...

Yeah, when St. Anger came out I remember an interview where they said Meshuggah had a big impact on the record. Honestly I haven't heard the record, but it was probably just talk.

welp. i guess ill just go meshuggah to even out the stacks. i haven't listened to opeth in over a year, i still think they are great but yeah just off them right now. i fell in love with meshuggah when obZen came out. incredible live band.

Agreed.

I went with Opeth, no brainer. Meshuggah is not even a bit interesting for me.

Edit: We can do the next one for PT and Opeth. Maybe...

i hate every fan of Meshuggah, must annoying ever. i think they are just trolling wen they say the band is good.
