why does many people call ''heavy metal'' any hard rock bands, like Mötley Crüe and Quiet Riot?

They DID say that when heavy metal was 'cool' back in the 80s. Ever since then, bands like Def Leppard and Motley Crue and their record labels are always at pains to emphasize they are hard rock, and have never been metal. If hard rock ever became uncool they'd jump right back on the metal bandwagon.

ok, i got it.

many hard rock bands have heavy metal influences, like malmsteen, mötley crüe, skid row and many others... i call these albuns ''Hard 'n' Heavy'', but it's hard to hear this term, no?
