Favorite solos evar!?

Nothing by PF or PoS comes close to Gary Moore's best stuff - heck, even Yngwie can outdo those, or could in his better days. A great solo to me also displays the artist's distinctive style and technical abilities, as part of the emotions the solo is trying to purvey. Some personal favorites:

Ron Jarzombek (Control and Resistance, Life Cycles, Eighths Is Enough)
Jason Gobel (How Could I)
Marty Friedman (The Pit And The Pendulum, Overture Volcanica)
Chuck (The Flesh And The Power It Holds)
Muhammed (Fermented Offal Discharge, even if it seems incongruous, when relating it to the subject matter...)

agree with the randy rhoads and dave gilmour nods.

Marty Friedman played most of my favorite solos in metal, so he wins.

fav PoS solo is "water"

meshuggah - glints collide

fav dream theater - under a glass moon, scarred, lines in the sand, trial of tears

ok what do you guys prefer slow or fast solo's?

Not "slow" or "fast" per se. More just how well a lead fits, how expressive, tasteful and evocative it is, the phrasing and - on an incidental level - the technique involved. I suppose the context in which the lead is played largely accounts for how effective it is, too (e.g. obviously a heartfelt and beautifully phrased Stevie Ray Vaughn or Billy Gibbons lead wouldn't fit in, say, a Morbid Angel track.) Err...sort of a shite example, but it's hard to say, since not all music featuring lead guitar requires some manically furious shredding and utterly precise technique. :erk: I'll cop out by saying it's all a matter of personal taste.

Nile - Von Unaussprechlichen Kulten
The solo is just so emotional and great. It's a slower Nile song.

Iron Maiden - Alexander the Great (although most of the solos on Somewhere in Time were fucking awesome)

From Nile, I really loved Unas, Slayer Of The Gods. The solo there is really powerful.

Not the most technical or flashy solo, but the one from Light Of Day, Day Of Darkness is also really powerful.
