Parin vuoden ikäinen brittiläisakti Fen on omintakeinen tapaus, jota on vaikea puhtaasti lokeroida yhden genren alle. Debyyttialbumilla matkustetaan niin post-rockin kuin tunnelmallisemman black metalin syvyyksiin, melankolisesta kevytmetallista puhumattakaan. Matka ei ole helppo, mutta sitäkin palkitsevampi.
Nelikkona toimiva bändi yhdistää musiikissaan moninaisia voimavaroja mielenkiintoisesti ja toimivasti. Herkimmillään liidetään ambient-vivahteisissa leijailumaisemissa ja Katatonian mieleen tuovissa fiilistelyosuuksissa, raaimmillaan taas lainataan norsecore-kuvaston rujoja riffittelyitä, joskin sieltä vähemmän omaperäisemmästä päästä. Toisaalta kipaleissa voi kuulla säväyksen varhaista Ulveria ja jossain määrin uudemman linjauksen Enslavedia. Jos yhdistelmä kuulostaakin oudolta, mutta kiinnostavalta, sitä se myös on.
Fen osaa herkän ja fiilistelevän himmailun karkeampaa repimistä paremmin, ja onkin vain positiivista, että tätä pehmeää leijailua on tarjolla kohtuullisen runsain mitoin. Toisaalta biisitarjonnan rosoinen black metal tasapainottaa levyn paikoin turhankin kevyttä poppistunnelmaa varsin tehokkaasti ja juuri näistä, jos jostain, tulevat levyn mielenyhtymät Enslavediin. Tavallaan sekoitus jättää hieman oudon ja sekavan fiiliksen, mutta jälkimaku kokonaisuudesta on herkullinen, palkitsevakin.
Tuotantopuoli on, toisin kuin kenties odottaisi, yllättävän karu ja puunaamaton. Tämä on levyn bm-osuuksien puolesta luonnollisesti vain hyvä asia, eikä se ehkä hieman yllättäen haittaa myöskään kappalekattauksen keveämpiä puoliskoa. Mitään primitiivista röpö- ja surinasoundia ei kuitenkaan kannata levyltä odottaa, jos nyt ei mitään hiifistelyäkään. Laulupuoli puolestaan vaihtelee karkean, mutta hyvän rääkynän ja pehmeänpuhtaan lauluosaston välillä. Hyvä niin, sillä tässä kokonaisuudessa kontrasti toimii.
Kaikkiaan Fen on positiivinen yllätys uusien bändien rintamalla, vaikkeivat sen osatekijät sinänsä varsinaisesti ainutlaatuisia olekaan. Se kuitenkin, mitä bändi tarjoaa, on hyvä sekoitus kahta erilaista tyyliä ja tällä kertaa naitos on onnistunut hyvin.

This album is fantastic! Well done to the guys in Fen! The atmosphere is really spot-on. Also, if Fen read this, thanks for a great gig while supporting Negura Bunget at London's Purple Turtle. I bought your EPs and t-shirt because your live performance told me I had to do it.
I can't think of many albums like the current Fen and Axis ones that keep giving me spine-tingling moments all the way through from start to finish. Keep up the good work!

Veramente prolifici questi Fen, band inglese formatasi nel 2006, che nel 2007 tramite la tedesca Northern Silcence ha dato alle stampe un mcd intitolato "Ancient sorrow", ed ora, per la nostrana Code 666 sforna questo "The malediction fields", che devo dire ero piuttosto curioso di ascoltare.
I nostri sono autori di un sound che partendo dal black metal si dirama in varie direzioni, se devo citare altre band potrei dire che i Fen suonano un misto tra Alcest, Agalloch e Primordial, il tutto con una personalità sicuramente notevole per una band attiva da così pochi anni.
Il precedente "Ancient sorrow" era un prodotto che lasciava intuire forti potenzialità, ma era ancora un po' troppo acerbo, con "The malediction fields" è avvenuto quel passo in avanti che mi sarei aspettato da questa talentuosa band inglese.
La musica dei Fen è un misto di atmosfere intimiste e malinconiche, lontane dalla freddezza del classico black metal, fortemente legata alla natura e quindi, grazie alle capacità della band, molto evocativa e capace di portarci lontano a livello emotivo.
Ci troviamo a cospetto di un disco veramente bello, che lungo le sue 7 canzoni per una durata complessiva di quasi un'ora, si articolano ampi momenti acustici e atmosferici, qualche sana sfuriata black metal e un riffing che nella sua semplicità riesce a essere ispirato e anche abbastanza vario, ho molto gradito l'uso delle tastiere, presenti solo in alcuni momenti e sempre in sottofondo, ma capaci di donare ancora più profondità al sound dei Fen, si può far meglio invece per quel che concerne il cantato pulito, ancora troppo insicuro e acerbo, anche la produzione, leggermente troppo grezza, pur essendo gradevole poteva essere migliore secondo me.
"The malediction fields" è un disco che sicuramente non sarà facile ai primi ascolti, ma se vi immergerete nel sound dei Fen col tempo vi troverete di fronte ad un album profondo e ispirato, sicuramente la band inglese ha ancora ampi margini di miglioramento, il voto in fondo forse è leggermente eccessivo, ma è un piacere vedere band al debutto suonare musica del genere con questa creatività e bravura, quindi non mi resta che consigliare fortemente l'ascolto di questo cd, bravi Fen, avanti così!

Nach der "Ancient Sorrow" EP von 2007 legen die vor gerade einmal drei Jahren gegründeten FEN nun nach und präsentieren mit "The Malediction Fields" ihr Debütalbum. Auf gänzlich unkonventionelle Weise kombinieren die Engländer dabei Elemente des Black Metals mit Prog/Post-Rock und in geringem Masse Folk als auch Ambient, dass es eine wahre Freude ist.
Atmosphärische Ambient Klanglandschaften, bittersüße Akustik Passagen, harsche und gleichzeitig furiose Black-Metal-Ausbrüche, ein wenig Bombast, vielseitig, offen und experimentierfreudig zeigen sich FEN. So ist der Metal sehr atmosphärisch und durchgehend zumindest schwarz angehaucht, bewegt sich dabei meist in mittleren Temporegionen. Gleichzeitig wirkt die Musik ziemlich eigenständig, zumindest will mir derzeit gerade keine Band einfallen, welche exakt wie diese Briten tönt. Als kleiner Versuch sei eine Mischung aus AGALLOCH, NEGURA BUNGET, PRIMORDIAL und BURZUM genannt, aber das trifft es auch nur sehr unzureichend.
Die Songs sind wirklich klasse strukturiert, abwechslungsreich und spannend, versehen mit einer dunklen, depressiven und hoffnungslosen Grundstimmung, welche mal eher wütend, aggressiv, dann wieder verhalten bis hin zu hochdramatisch pendelt. Ganz große Momente sind es, wenn sich zu den sägenden Gitarren, den rauen Schreien noch ergreifende klare Chöre gesellen. An dieser Stelle muss jedoch angemerkt werden, dass der Kreischgesang stark ist, der klare Gesang aber nicht so ganz mitzuhalten vermag, gerade hier sehe ich noch etwas Verbesserungspotential.
Mit "The Malediction Fields" ist Fen ein sehr emotionales, atmosphärisch dichtes und fesselndes Album geglückt, welches wunderbar unterschiedliche Stile miteinander verbindet, dabei aber trotzdem noch seinen rauen Charakter beibehalten hat, nicht verwässert ist. Sehr schön!

[FONT=Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif] Da una base prettamente black si parte per arrivare fino al post rock - passando per il folk, fughe progressive ed atmosfere evocative dettate da tappeti ambient - attraversando nel bel mezzo di questi estremi gli umori più disparati di matrice esclusivamente malinconica. E' questo il tracciato stilistico del primo full lenght di questa band inglese che mostra fin da subito una personalità prorompente, come se sulla scena da una vita, ma nata solo nel 2006. Personalità che unita al talento fa di "The Malediction Fields" un disco notevole, una perla di disperazione assoluta che si affaccia ai primordi di questo nuovo anno tutt'altro che luminoso. Un'ora di sfuriate black che si quietano per diventare passaggi acustici, digressioni sonore decadenti, fino ad invadere squisitamente il campo prediletto da band come Mogwai e Godspeed You! Black Emperor. A far da Virgilio lungo le "terre maledette" la voce di The Watcher, ora urlata, ora pulita, in entrambi i casi in grado di esaltare tutte le sfumature rese dalla parte strumentale. Quest'ultima di un equilibrio sorprendente. Unico appunto da muovere è che a tratti, soltanto a tratti, affiora qualche lungaggine di troppo, ma la qualità delle composizioni è tale da non renderla un peso. Così anche brani di sette minuti e passa arrivano alla conclusione insinuandoti la voglia di riascoltarli di nuovo. Subito. Come la dolorosissima "Colossal Voids", un titolo un programma. Come il lamento in crescendo di "The Warren". Inni alla desolazione ispirati, come l'intero album, alle emozioni suscitate dalla campagna inglese e dai suoi paesaggi mistici. Questo e molto altro è "The Malediction Fields", lavoro inizialmente d'impatto, ma che va scoperto ascolto dopo ascolto per calarsi pienamente nell'universo fosco e solitario di una nuova, esaltante grandissima band.[/FONT]

Dopo il gran colpo messo a segno l'anno passato dagli A Forest of Stars, l'Inghilterra riprova ad uscire dall'anonimato cui solitamente versa la sua scena Black Metal con un altro debutto interessante: The Malediction Fields dei Fen, pubblicato dalla sempre lungimirante etichetta nostrana Code666.
Il quartetto d'oltremanica s'era già fatto notare due anni fa con l'interessante EP Ancient Sorrow, di sole tre canzoni; The Malediction Fields va quindi a rinfrescare e rinsaldare la personalità della band, sovente pubblicizzata ed esaltata come un originale ibrido tra il Black Metal e il Post Rock.
In realtà la tanto decantata vena Post Rock è veramente poca cosa in termini quantitativi, ma la musica presentata dai quattro dell'Inghilterra orientale ha comunque dei buonissimi numeri: si tratta di un Black Metal fortemente melodico, ricolmo di inserti intimistici (chitarre acustiche, pianoforte) e soventemente sorretto dalla tastiera; il riffing, peraltro quasi sempre accompagnato da secondari arpeggi atmosferici, non eccede praticamente mai in scatti violenti o feroci, rimanendo invece sempre su lidi malinconici e sognanti, spesso sfiorando atmosfere di mesto Rock decadente.
Non sorprende, quindi, che l'arpeggio che apre il disco sembri estratto direttamente da Pale Folklore: gli americani Agalloch sono un riferimento importante -anzi, fondamentale- per questi giovani inglesi, e l'influenza della band dell'Oregon riecheggia netta in tutto il disco (si faccia riferimento a Ashes Against the Grain per i momenti più moderni e soprattutto a Pale Folklore per i segmenti più naturalistici).
Ad allontanare i Fen dalla tradizione Black è non solo la già discussa, accentuata propensione per la melodia, ma anche la discreta cura per le parti di basso (strumento solitamente trascurato nel genere) e un certo sentore progressivo che impone ai brani di cercare sempre uno sviluppo ragionato ed intelligente: le otto canzoni di The Malediction Fields hanno tutte durata consistente e si snodano in maniera sufficientemente fluida tra sezioni più aggressive (con tempi spediti, riffing più intenso e voce in rauco screaming) ed altre più distese (con le tastiere a offrire respiro alle chitarre, abili nel ritirarsi in una dimensione più calda e sfuggente).
E' presente in buone dosi anche il canto pulito, la cui leggera indecisione vocale sui registri alti non inficia comunque la resa emozionale di brani come Exile's Journey (ottimo Melodic Black pieno di cambi d'atmosfera e inserti acustici) o Colossal Voids, che potrebbe benissimo essere una b-side del recente Souvenirs d'un Autre Monde di Alcest, con tastiere eteree a supportare sottili interventi pianistici e tenui cori puliti sopra un giro di chitarra Rock trasognato e nebuloso.
L'esatta metà dell'album è inoltre occasione per i Fen di mettere in mostra atmosfere dalla vivacità pressochè opposta, ma rese complementari da un comune feeling introspettivo e nostalgico: la lunghissima, amabile e soffusa introduzione di chitarre e pianoforte di The Warren (momento più dolce di tutto l'album) è infatti preceduta dalla ben più burrascosa e nerboruta As Buried Spirits Stir, quest'ultima coronata da un inaspettato assolo di spagnoleggiante chitarra classica, non particolarmente significativo sotto il profilo tecnico ma nota sicuramente positiva per quanto riguarda la personalità dimostrata dalla band.
Dunque un esordio più che positivo -seppur con ovvi margini di miglioramento- per il quartetto inglese, che con questo The Malediction Fields potrà sicuramente soddisfare chiunque ricerchi un album Black Metal che sia sognante, ispirato e ricco di melodie ma che sappia anche guardare con criterio al di fuori del genere d'origine, spingendo il proprio sguardo verso territori Rock.
I Fen non sono ancora capaci di attraversare le barriere del proprio genere musicale in maniera completa e compiuta, ma sono dotati delle capacità e della visione per poterlo fare con scioltezza in futuro per ora ci si accontenti di gustarsi questo loro soddisfacente debutto sulla lunga distanza.

Dopo il gran colpo messo a segno l'anno passato dagli A Forest of Stars, l'Inghilterra riprova ad uscire dall'anonimato cui solitamente versa la sua scena Black Metal con un altro debutto interessante: The Malediction Fields dei Fen, pubblicato dalla sempre lungimirante etichetta nostrana Code666.
Il quartetto d'oltremanica s'era già fatto notare due anni fa con l'interessante EP Ancient Sorrow, di sole tre canzoni; The Malediction Fields va quindi a rinfrescare e rinsaldare la personalità della band, sovente pubblicizzata ed esaltata come un originale ibrido tra il Black Metal e il Post Rock.
In realtà la tanto decantata vena Post Rock è veramente poca cosa in termini quantitativi, ma la musica presentata dai quattro dell'Inghilterra orientale ha comunque dei buonissimi numeri: si tratta di un Black Metal fortemente melodico, ricolmo di inserti intimistici (chitarre acustiche, pianoforte) e soventemente sorretto dalla tastiera; il riffing, peraltro quasi sempre accompagnato da secondari arpeggi atmosferici, non eccede praticamente mai in scatti violenti o feroci, rimanendo invece sempre su lidi malinconici e sognanti, spesso sfiorando atmosfere di mesto Rock decadente.
Non sorprende, quindi, che l'arpeggio che apre il disco sembri estratto direttamente da Pale Folklore: gli americani Agalloch sono un riferimento importante -anzi, fondamentale- per questi giovani inglesi, e l'influenza della band dell'Oregon riecheggia netta in tutto il disco (si faccia riferimento a Ashes Against the Grain per i momenti più moderni e soprattutto a Pale Folklore per i segmenti più naturalistici).
Ad allontanare i Fen dalla tradizione Black è non solo la già discussa, accentuata propensione per la melodia, ma anche la discreta cura per le parti di basso (strumento solitamente trascurato nel genere) e un certo sentore progressivo che impone ai brani di cercare sempre uno sviluppo ragionato ed intelligente: le otto canzoni di The Malediction Fields hanno tutte durata consistente e si snodano in maniera sufficientemente fluida tra sezioni più aggressive (con tempi spediti, riffing più intenso e voce in rauco screaming) ed altre più distese (con le tastiere a offrire respiro alle chitarre, abili nel ritirarsi in una dimensione più calda e sfuggente).
E' presente in buone dosi anche il canto pulito, la cui leggera indecisione vocale sui registri alti non inficia comunque la resa emozionale di brani come Exile's Journey (ottimo Melodic Black pieno di cambi d'atmosfera e inserti acustici) o Colossal Voids, che potrebbe benissimo essere una b-side del recente Souvenirs d'un Autre Monde di Alcest, con tastiere eteree a supportare sottili interventi pianistici e tenui cori puliti sopra un giro di chitarra Rock trasognato e nebuloso.
L'esatta metà dell'album è inoltre occasione per i Fen di mettere in mostra atmosfere dalla vivacità pressochè opposta, ma rese complementari da un comune feeling introspettivo e nostalgico: la lunghissima, amabile e soffusa introduzione di chitarre e pianoforte di The Warren (momento più dolce di tutto l'album) è infatti preceduta dalla ben più burrascosa e nerboruta As Buried Spirits Stir, quest'ultima coronata da un inaspettato assolo di spagnoleggiante chitarra classica, non particolarmente significativo sotto il profilo tecnico ma nota sicuramente positiva per quanto riguarda la personalità dimostrata dalla band.
Dunque un esordio più che positivo -seppur con ovvi margini di miglioramento- per il quartetto inglese, che con questo The Malediction Fields potrà sicuramente soddisfare chiunque ricerchi un album Black Metal che sia sognante, ispirato e ricco di melodie ma che sappia anche guardare con criterio al di fuori del genere d'origine, spingendo il proprio sguardo verso territori Rock.

Ogni singolo pezzo alterna la crudezza del black metal minimale a tappeti di musica ambient sempre molto enfatici e dallincedere cupo. Anche le voci si adeguano a questi ritmi, con il singer The Watcher che alterna un raggelante screaming a tonalità pulite e sofferte.
Ovvio che il panorama di riferimento è abbastanza elitario e questo freddo acquarello invernale non piacerà a tutti. Tuttavia, avvicinarsi ad episodi quali la sulfurea Exiles Journey, dalle brusche accelerazioni in chiave black, oppure la psichedelica Colossal Voids (che mostra come anche i Black Sabbath e i Saint Vitus occupino un posto tra le influenze di questi musicisti), ha un indubbio fascino. Degna di menzione è poi la conclusiva Bereft, una litania struggente, pregiata da una delle più belle fughe ambient sentite di recente. Bravi e meritevoli di attenzione dai pochi (e giustamente esigenti) fruitori del genere.

Gli inglesi Fen sono fortemente ispirati dal luogo dal quale provengono, ovvero la campagna a est di Londra, con i suoi paesaggi desolati, le brughiere nebbiose, le stesse brughiere che hanno ispirato Il mastino dei Baskerville di Sir Arthur Conan Doyle.
Il sound di partenza è puro black metal, anche se, in riferimento ai paesaggi di cui sopra, la band si diverte ad inserire parti acustiche, altre ambient, tali da virare il sound verso un mood più folkish.
Il risultato sono sette canzoni piene di sorrow, dai toni lugubri, molto affini a certo doom di stampo My Dying Bride. Colossal Voids contiene anche clean vocals che fanno molto contrasto con gli screams del singer, tale che la canzone diviene uno strano post-rock, dai toni gotici.
La successiva As Buried Spirits Stir ancora una volta crea atmosfere antiche, maligne, quasi lovecraftiane.
Bisogna dire che la band nelle parti esclusivamente black non impressiona, trovando quindi la propria ragion dessere nelle contaminazioni ulteriori. Le canzoni sono tutte lunghe, e spesso non è facile mantenere viva lattenzione per tutta la durata.
The Malediction Fields non è un disco facile, non solo perché abbisogna di parecchi ascolti per essere digerito, ma soprattutto perché non ha un target definito di utenti, farà sicuramente storcere la bocca ai puristi black, mentre a chi il black non lo ama forse non basterà la contaminazione per farselo piacere.
La verità, come in tutte le cose, sta in mezzo. Questo disco non è certo un capolavoro, ma offre parecchi spunti di notevole interesse.

To an outsider black metal is likely to be considered as being violent and harsh and in many cases it is. However that same outsider could well be in for a shock if they were confronted by the beauty of a band such as Drudkh, for example. Nature is one theme that has been embraced by black metal bands and is both harsh and beautiful so it is only natural that both emotions are musically counterpoised to represent it fully. Taking this perhaps a step further though is the more recent concept of shoegazing black metal (for want of a better definition). This sees aspects of Indie bands championed by the New Musical Express in the late 80s and early 90s seeping into the music and dreamily invoking a passion, which as the term states, has you somewhat drifting off and staring at your footwear in a trance. As the music of bands such as Ride, Lush and Slowdive proved at the time to be both effective and even at their best wondrous I am quite happy to see this development seeping into the works of such groups as Alcest, Agalloch and UK band Fen whose new album The Malediction Fields may in time be looked back as one of the defining pieces of this somewhat unexpected sub-genre. The two emotions meet as we progress and barbarity and maudlin atmospheric tones clash head on. Songs are long, fantastically constructed and have plenty of opportunity to twist and turn as they develop. As a listener you have plenty of opportunity to really lose yourself in this. A glistening guitar passage acoustically ebbs and keyboards also uplift the music in a sense that makes you feel the sun has just broken out from behind a pitch black storm cloud. Clean vocals work in the background here and are at this point spot on. A Witness To The Passing Of Aeons sends shivers down the spine with arcane sounding keyboards and low growls as it intros. From there the guitar work really does sparkle at times reminding of the myriad wonder from one of my favourite albums Fields Of The Nephilims Elyzium. It is also noted that the front-man of Fen has adopted the name of The Watcher for this project. [/SIZE][/FONT][/SIZE][/FONT]

The Warren has a really long instrumental start to it and one that reminds me of Blackwater Park era Opeth and sums up the bleak and depressive air of things to perfection. Con grandissima onestà non nascondono il loro debito verso gli Agalloch e i Negură Bunget, gruppi con i quali parrebbero condividere la scelta di cercare la commistione col folk e di badare sempre allatmosfera e non solo allimpatto. Nel trasporre in musica questo dualismo atmosfera/impatto, i Fen finiscono per strutturare i propri brani secondo unalternanza pieni/vuoti che li ha fatti spesso associare al post-rock, ma a sentire certe parti di chitarra più esplosive e certi suoni di tastiere - non andrebbe escluso linflusso generale di gente come Slowdive o My Bloody Valentine, sempre che non si sia stufi di attribuire parentele indie ad alcune nuove band black metal (Caïna, Wolves In The Throne Room o Alcest, ad esempio). I Fen, dunque, non arrivano primi né propongono sintesi impensabili, però riescono spesso a trasmettere uninfinita tristezza, una malinconia lacerante, e tanto dovrebbe bastare. Non si può spiegare tutto razionalmente e qui sta la loro vittoria ma in Exile's Journey, Lashed By Storm o As Buried Spirit Stir si capisce che anche le parti più rabbiose nascono dalla sofferenza più che dallodio, mentre con Colossal Void, o anche con A Witness To The Passing Of Aeons, il temperamento malinconico della band emerge con chiarezza.
Con tutti questi spunti musicali e con questo talento innato, non si può che ben sperare per dei Fen in continua crescita, affrancati da ogni paragone con tutti i loro molti fratelli maggiori.

Fen - The Malediction Fields [Atmospheric Black Metal]
Großbritannien ist in Sachen Black Metal absolut keine Hochburg. Und wirklich bekannte Black Metal Bands gibt es aus dieser Region erst recht nicht. 2007 zeigten allerdings vier wirklich tallentierte Musiker, dass auch die Insulaner auf diesem Gebiet einiges drauf haben können. Die EP "Ancient Sorrow" erhielt weitest gehend gute Kritiken und fiel besonders durch eine interessante Mischung von Black Metal und Progressive Rock auf. Ein Jahr wurde es dann still um Fen. Zu dieser Zeit verliefen die Aufnahmen für das Debut Album "The Malediction Fields", welches von der Fangemeinde sehnsüchtig erwartet wurde.
Und tatsächlich bietet der neue Silberling alles was man erwartet hat: Black Metal Attacken im mittleren Tempo, melancholische, Ambient-angehauchte Gitarrenpassagen, sowie eine gesunde Portion Progressive Rock, die überhaupt nicht künstlich klingt, sondern sich sehr gut in das Album einfügt.
Gerade letzteres macht die Platte einfach unheimlich interessant und bietet eine gelungene Abwechslung zu dem Black Metal-Einheitsbrei. Dabei muss man betonen, dass während des gesamten Albums eine unheimlich dichte, bedrückende und melancholische Atmosphäre erhalten wird, dass man schon das eine oder andere mal Gänsehaut bekommen kann.
Ein Spiel mit den Gefühlen des Hörers. Der Black Metal Anteil ist gut, auch das Gekrächze von Sänger The Watcher kommt gut rüber. An dieser Stelle muss ich aber dann auch leider zu dem fast einzigen, aber ziemlich großen Kritikpunkt kommen: Der "klare" Gesang von The Watcher. Ob man es überhaupt noch klar nennen darf, weiß ich nicht, denn er vertut sich das eine oder andere mal einfach so extrem in der Gesangslage und trifft derart wenige Töne, dass man echt traurig über das verlorene Potential der Scheibe wird. Es ist nicht so, dass der Gesang das komplette Album zerstört, aber ein Wermutstropfen bleibt dennoch.
Das Album hat mit knapp einer Stunde Spielzeit bei nur 7 Tracks eine gesunde Länge und auch sonst wirkt es kompakt, zusammenhängend und ausgereift. Ebenso überzeugen kann die Aufnahmequalität.
Man merkt also, es gibt wenig zu bemängeln. Wäre da nur nicht dieser furchtbare Gesang (der aber auch einen relativ kleinen Anteil des Albums ausmacht). Mit einem guten, gefühlvollen Gesang, wie ihn beispielsweise Agalloch auf der "The Mantle" benutzen (übrigens einer der wenigen Bands, bei denen ich einen Vergleich zu Fen angebracht finde), wäre dieses Album ein annähernd perfekter Black Metal Meilenstein der Moderne. So bleibt es aber "nur" ein gutes bis sehr gutes Album mit unglaublichen Emotionen, das den Hörer über die komplette Spielzeit hinweg fesselt.

Großbritannien ist in Sachen Black Metal absolut keine Hochburg. Und wirklich bekannte Black Metal Bands gibt es aus dieser Region erst recht nicht. 2007 zeigten allerdings vier wirklich tallentierte Musiker, dass auch die Insulaner auf diesem Gebiet einiges drauf haben können. Die EP "Ancient Sorrow" erhielt weitest gehend gute Kritiken und fiel besonders durch eine interessante Mischung von Black Metal und Progressive Rock auf. Ein Jahr wurde es dann still um Fen. The first 2009 album to be reviewed here is an atmospheric black metal debut from the UK’s Fen. It’s an emotional work that further develops the post-rock/shoegaze elements that have been creeping into metal over the years and juxtaposes these progressions with organic riffs and cathartic release. The effect is stunning, as rage and sorrow play against each other on a gray, misty moor.
Like its aesthetic cousins Agalloch and The Morningside, the incorporation of clean vocals and subtle symphonic touches give this album an expansive and epic feel. However, the clean vocals, in comparison to the raw metal growls, sound understated and weak amid the hypnotic musicianship. Still, the contrast between this softening element and the bleak ambiance shows the development of a unique and mesmerizing sound, one that stands unique and compelling in a crowded genre. Fen show signs of a great creative stride.
Again, this is an emotional work, and I commend the band for taking the risk at incorporating their more sensitive and melodic persuasions into the black metal fray. Its refreshing to hear an act that focuses on building an enveloping atmosphere rather than simply laying down standard riffs and chilling shrieks. The Malediction Fields is a rich work, full of interesting textures, harmonies and woodland imagery and makes for a stunning ode to contemplative isolation. As the Western world rests in a deep freeze, Fen’s work makes for a compelling listen. Ice, snow, dirt and fallen branches, reflected in the brooding sounds of Fen’s debut.

I have been a fan of Fen for a little while now, listening to Ancient Sorrow religiously. But it always struck me as three very separate songs. When I heard that there would be a full length coming out, I was somewhat nervous. My morning song for months was 'The Gales Scream of Loss', my favourite from the EP. It was a distinct possibility that an album would take an approach more similar to 'Under the Endless Sky', my least favourite. But fortunately, The Malediction Fields sounds more like a mix of the first two tracks and then some!
One of the high points of Ancient Sorrow was the clean singing. It is much more prominent on The Malediction Fields, which I like very much! However, they don't just sounds like an Agalloch or Ulver (Bergtatt) ripoff. The cleans are very authentic they certainly do not have the polished evenness that Agalloch uses. Instead, the vocals are less of an instrument, but not near to the other 'lead vocal' extreme. Fen manages to strike a good balance.
But how to describe the music? Fen takes folky atmosphere that closest resembles Ulver's 'Bergtatt', but at the same time, brings something very new to the table. At times furious, at times calm, beautiful, brooding, atmospheric, sometimes even doomy. The Malediction Fields encompasses a wide and tasteful range of emotions.
My personal favourite song would have to be The Warren. It contains a brooding atmospheric buildup that is both tense and enjoyable at the same time, before erupting into some delicious black metal fury. The buildup becomes quite teasing after a few listens, in a way that I have only heard Forest of Shadows do (on Wish).
Individual performances are just fine. The guitars are solid, harsh vocals are tasteful and expressive, clean vocals are far from perfect, but that just adds to the feel. My only real gripe is in the drums. The bass drum is close to inaudible throughout the album, and at times the snare drum is not much better. The performance is perfectly adequate, but the levels are just not quite right.
I am sick to death of hearing black metal cliches such as freezing winter landscapes and goat-crushingly necro. Very few bands merit the catchphrases that stalk their names. Not even (most of) my very favourites. But Fen is one of the few that I feel deserves this a gentle snowing evening with a fire creates the same kind of atmosphere for me.

Eigentlich würde ich Fen gerne nicht so prall finden. "Post-Rock" im Promotext ist anno 2008 einfach ein bisschen zu sehr im Trend. Und zu allem Übel oft nicht mehr als Etikettenschwindel. Doch dummerweise haben die Briten eine derart ablehnende Haltung gar nicht verdient. Erstens weil sie zumindest in meiner Wahrnehmung mit die Ersten waren, die von ihrem BM behauptet haben, derlei Einflüsse zu verarbeiten. Und außerdem klingt auf "The Malediction Fields" etwas durch, das tatsächlich Post-Rock sein könnte. Hier werden also keine stinknormalen und ebenso langweiligen ruhigen Abschnitte unter einem trendy Namen an hippe Kunden verkauft - das ist ja schon mal was.
Damit hätten wir festgehalten, dass ich Fen zumindest nicht einfach aus Prinzip doof finden kann. Und wie man mit einem schnellen Blick nach unten herausfinden kann, habe ich auch sonst keine besonders schwerwiegenden Gründe gefunden, um diesen Mangel auszugleichen. Kurz gesagt: Ob ich es will oder nicht, "The Malediction Fields" ist ein ziemlich gutes Album geworden. Verantwortlich dafür ist natürlich nicht der vermeintlich besonders tolle Post-Rock (auch wenn sich diese Passagen atmosphärisch gelungen ins Gesamtbild einfügen), sondern die Tatsache, dass Fen schlicht guten Black Metal fabrizieren. Stilistisch wie stimmungsmäßig beackert die Truppe dabei ein ziemlich weites Feld. Von Burzum-Beat bis Bombast findet sich beinahe alles, ebenso reicht die Gefühlsskala von klassisch-aggressiv über verhalten melancholisch bis hin zu hochdramatisch. Erfreulicherweise wirkt das Alles auch noch wie aus einem Guss, und zu richtigen Gänsehauthöhepunkten reicht es obendrein. Die einsame Gitarre um die 5:30-Marke in "Lashed By Storm" etwa ist ein BM-Moment für die Ewigkeit.
Nach soviel Lobhudelei müsste nun eigentlich eine extrem hohe Endnote folgen. Rein gefühlsmäßig neige ich auch dazu, doch der Ehrlichkeit halber muss ich an dieser Stelle festhalten, dass "The Malediction Fields" leider kein perfektes Album ist. Liegen tut das am "klaren" Gesang, der stellenweise so abartig schief klingt, dass man ihn wirklich bloß in Anführungszeichen schreiben kann. Keine Sorge, ruiniert wird der Silberling dadurch nicht, zumindest nicht für mich. Es ist aber irgendwo traurig, dass aus der Scheibe nicht das Meisterwerk gemacht wurde, das sie mit einem ordentlichen Sänger hätte sein können.

Dit is een release waar ik erg nieuwsgierig naar was. Hun vorige wapenfeit was een EP getiteld Ancient Sorrow dewelke lovende kritieken ontving wereldwijd. Vooral hun unieke stijl deed menig metal liefhebber goedkeurend de wenkbrauwen fronsen. Deze Britten kicken er namelijk op om hun zeer sfeervolle dark/black metal te benaderen met een postrock-achtige aanpak waardoor er een bijzonder totaal-geluid ontstaat.
Zeven songs voor een totale speelduur van bijna 60 minuten (!), het is dus een understatement om te zeggen dat je bij dit Brits orkestje waar krijgt voor je zuurverdiende geld. Meer zelfs, ze slagen er ook wonderwel in om je aandacht gedurende dit uur meer dan vast te houden. Dat op zich is al een compliment waardig. Deze heren specialiseren zich erin om met gevoel voor hypnose, lange uitgesponnen nummers te schrijven. Het knappe hier aan is dat de sfeer en de opbouw van de song bij hen centraal staan. Vaak beginnen hun nummers immers met een simpele riff die naarmate de track voortduurt continu verder wordt uitgediept door geleidelijke welgeplaatste muzische toevoegingen zoals sombere keyboardlijnen, cleane (koor)zang, extra riffs,... Een aanpak die je dus ook vaak terug hoort bij de betere post-rock acts.

De band slaagt er met deze plaat in om een goede balans te vinden binnen hun songs door inventief te spelen tussen meer ingetogen passages en heftige black metal erupties waardoor het geheel voorzien wordt van de nodige dynamiek. Wel blijven de nummers grotendeels hangen in de mid-tempo regionen waardoor je af en toe het gevoel krijgt dat sommige nummers wat op elkaar beginnen te lijken. Naar toekomstige releases toe is er dus nog zeker wel ruimte voor progressie. Desondanks leveren ze met dit The Malediction Fields een sterke debuut full-length af waarop ze een donkere, melancholische en bij momenten zelfs dromerige atmosfeer weten op te roepen die zeker door fans van bands als Agalloch en Alcest gesmaakt zal worden. Ik denk dat ik maar eens op zoek ga naar die EP, mij hebben ze met deze plaat alvast overtuigd van hun kwaliteiten.

Brittibläkkäri Fen aikoo julkaista debyyttialbuminsa The Malediction Fields Code666 Recordsin kautta ensi vuoden tammikuussa. Parin vuoden ajan toimineen metalliryhmän esikoinen ilmestyy 16.1.2009. Yhtyeen mukaan The Malediction Fields tarjoaa perinteisen raivokkaan black metal -mylvinnän ohessa lempeitäkin akustisia osuuksia. Kiekko pyrkii muuttamaan ääneksi eristäytyneisyyden, menetyksen ja ajattoman toivottomuuden tunteet. Fenin joukot joutuivat lykkäämään opuksen julkaisuhetkeä syyskuun 17. päivä, jolloin bändi siirsi kiekon ilmestymistä marraskuusta ensi vuoden tammikuuksi. Yhtye kertoo, ettei sillä itsellään tai levy-yhtiö Code666:lla ollut mitään tekemistä lykkäyksen takia, vaan syypää löytyy albumin jakelusta vastaavasta tahosta. Esikoisalbumin valmistamisesta bändi kertoi ensimmäistä kertaa elokuussa, jolloin yhtye tilitti purkittaneensa The Malediction Fields -levyn omassa studiossaan. Valtaosa rytmisoitinten raidoista on soitettu livenä ilman suurempia taukoja tai pätkittelyä, sillä Fen pyrkii tällä tavoin tarjoamaan kuuntelijalle mahdollisimman luonnollisen kuuntelukokemuksen.
Fen soittaa uuden albumin biisejä yleisölle ensimmäistä kertaa 27. päivä kuluvaa kuukautta Lontoossa. Keikkalauteilla esiintyy romanialaisen Brethren Negura Bunget, jonka kanssa metallimiehet ovat esiintyneet aikaisemminkin. Lontoon keikka koetaan The Purple Turtlen tiloissa. Samassa paikassa Fen kaavailee esiintyvänsä myös 26. maaliskuuta 2009. Jälkimmäisen keikan yhteydessä musisoi myös itävaltalainen Dornenreich.
