Thanks for the comment. Yeah, my last experience with a P bass was doing 80's thrash or "hair metal" where the guitar tones were more shrill and less "thick". A big P bass tone worked great with that sort of stuff. I'm not sure if a P bass will get lost in the mix or be too thick with the more modern rectifier tones, etc. Although, the P bass special has the J bridge pickup, so I would think you could dial in more "bite" for better bass definition....
What's driving my questions is that I found a good deal on a P bass special (rosewood board), which is actually cheaper than a standard jazz bass, and a jazz bass active I was looking at. I just want to make sure if I go the P bass special route, I won't be making a mistake by not spending the extra cash on one of the jazz basses.
