One of the greatest film composers of all time has passed on...

from cinescape.com

Academy Award-winning film composer Jerry Goldsmith, the creator of hundreds of memorable movie and television scores, has died. Goldsmith passed away last evening at his Beverly Hills home after a long battle with cancer. He was 75 years old.

Over the course of more than half a century Goldsmith wrote the music for an incredibly broad and diverse spectrum of film entertainment. If you watched THE WALTONS, POLICE STORY, BARNABY JONES, THE MAN FROM U.N.C.L.E. or Rod Serling's THE TWILIGHT ZONE, then you heard his work in those shows' -- and many others -- theme songs.

On the silver screen he composed the music for an array of box office successes, touching upon all genres of entertainment. A small sampling of his many accomplishments include the scores for such films as LILIES OF THE FIELD (1963), IN LIKE FLINT (1967), PLANET OF THE APES (1968), LOGAN'S RUN (1976), THE OMEN (1976), ALIEN (1979), STAR TREK: THE MOTION PICTURE (1979), POLTERGEIST (1982), all three RAMBO films, TOTAL RECALL (1990), BASIC INSTINCT (1992), STAR TREK: FIRST CONTACT (1996), L.A. CONFIDENTIAL (1997), THE MUMMY (1999) and LOONEY TUNES: BACK IN ACTION (2003). He also composed the theme music for the this past year's Academy Awards show, the theme for STAR TREK: VOYAGER and his music from the first STAR TREK film served as the theme music for STAR TREK: THE NEXT GENERATION.

In all his years Goldsmith was nominated for 17 Oscars but won just once (for THE OMEN.) He won four Emmys (including one for his work on STAR TREK: VOYAGER) and was nominated eight times for Golden Globes.

Goldsmith talent touched the ears of hundreds of millions of listeners around the world and gave us all music to accompany the images we were watching. His presence will be sorely missed by all of his fans, and we here at CINESCAPE would like to pass on our condolences to his family and friends.

Jerry Goldsmith gave us some of the best scores around, I'll miss his music, especially from The Omen, Poltergiest, The Twilight Zone and Alien. He was like a chameleon, completely different and distinctive music for each movie he did, and I absolutely loved his sci-fi music from Voyager, Logans Run, Star Trek the Motion Picture and Total Recall. Thanks J.G. I salute you. :( :( :(
