Finished that Hallelujah cover. enjoy (masterd by zee_wavesufer

the strings were actually most of the focus, she doesn't pride her self in a singer as much as violinist, but i think over all it turned out pretty well. yeah i should have raised the vocals a bit more. but i love how everything sits, first time mixing something like this, so hey its good practice

I'd remove the piano and just use voice + strings... Maybe? At least just play chords on the piano, not the 'plucking' or whatever you piano-players call it ;)

I would have quantized the backing vocals, they ping-pong a bit.

And I wouldn't have used so much compression on the vocals. I think for this they need the dynamics (the song and vocals are the exact same volume the entire way through.. no climax), and it just sounds way too harsh and poppy. I would have used a different compressor too. Which one did you use? It sounds like a free one I've got, great for screams but not for cleans imo. It boosts 2khz in a very aggressive way.

However, despite that it all melds together very very well, an excellent mix.

Definitely, I mean the mix is miles better than anything I could ever whip up but what lends impact to this song is the dynamics, especially in the Buckley version, where everything dies down including the vocals and then builds back up again so theres that much more impact. This feels a bit sterile in that regard because it's too consistent and it doesn't take you on that journey.

There is no body in the piano. If you've recorded it in midi move everything down one octave. It sounds a bit honky-tonky. It interferes with the other strings, it would also make the song more dynamic.

sounds good but I think the elements of the mix are fighting with each other a little.
I would use a less conservative panning like : Strings LEFT - vocals CENTER - piano RIGHT
also the piano sounds to shinny (try a low-pass (high-cut) at 3-7khz with 12dB filter quality )
And vocals need to be louder IMO

cheers and happy xmas :)

I agree with Matt Cohen that the violins are just too present and in your face. This song is about the vocals.
As much as it's cool that it's a different take on the song, if you stray too far from the original, it sucks, it needs to at least have some elements of the original intact.
The lack of dynamics kinda made me bored too. This ain't straight line tech death "in your face muthafucker" that is cool with being compressed and undynamic, the dynamics gives music like this life.
I listened to it once through, and tried again and then half way through it was like "Fuck, this is boring now, give it some dynamics!"

Really not digging the vocals still.. apart from the performance (awful for a song of this calibre), they're too distorted, too compressed, too one dimensional and your gate is messing up at times. Its perfect for a pop mix or metal, but for this I just don't think its right at all. I'd personally lose the gate, lose the autotune (if its REALLY needed on some notes use it), and only take a few dBs off with compression.

The rest sounds good though. Still missing a bit of a climax though. Maybe you can do more with the instrumentation towards the end. Bring in more instruments or something, or leave some out until the end.
