I know firewire is better but it would be a pain in the ass to put a firewire card in my computer. So should i be worried about lag using usb if im only recording one channel at a time. Im looking at mic interfaces that cost no more than $200 so keep that in mind. I really need to know this fast.

I never had any problems w/my old M-Audio USB Mobilepre. Worked fine for me other than the pres/ADDA not being the best..

If you're only doing one channel at a time USB should be fine.

Why not a PCI card? no preamps, but for the money you can get a card with Adat I/O, so it will be expandable.
And if you have 12 I/O...some day you'll use them.

usb is really shite for audio, really unstable.
putting a firewire card in isnt THAT much effort is it now?

The firewire card would be a pain in the ass because my motherboard is a mirco(i forget the company) so it only has two PCI slots which are being taken up by my graphics card(i need my Call of Duty 2 and Halo) and my wireless card. When the time comes that i need more inputs ill invest in a firepod but for now one or two inputs will do.

wow only 2 pci slots, thats crazy, then it looks like unless you get a new computer with more slots then USB is your only option. USB isnt terrible but it wont work if you going to be doing things that require a ton of mics aka drums and more detailed guitar micing. if your just beginning USB is fine and u can mnage but realize you are just putting off spending money that no doubt u will spend in a few months

Yeah i know two PCI slots is nuts. My brother and one of his friends designed the computer with only gaming in mind. We were on a tight buget and the micro board offers good performance for a good price. Just not a lot of PCI slots.

Im looking at these three interfaces.

The Lexicon Lamda is the one im most interested in, but i've heard there are issues with a high pitched buzz when using the phantom power with some condenser mics. Any suggestions that cost no nore than $200
