What do you guys think?

http://www.apple.com/

I'm excited to think that I can get 4x the performance out of a Mac laptop, but I'm weary about what this might mean for plug-ins. Anyone know if the AU spec is processor specific or not?

Happy to see that MOTU is already providing Intel-based Firewire/USB drivers. Hopefully DP 4.6 will go Universal Binary soon as well.

I'm gonna buy one over the summer. They said in one article that some of these new ones are 2-3 times faster than the last series. I think this move is enough to make me switch over.

edit: Oh it actually talks about the speed increase on that front page you linked.

edit 2: It says the MacBook Pro runs GarageBand 2.1x faster than the PowerBook G4 and 1.6x faster on the new iMac than the G5s, so that's probably a good indication that Pro Tools etc is going to have a nice increase in plugin processing power.

4x because they're comparing a new dual core to an old single outdated G4 processor :tickled:

I wouldn't buy the first gen, they always seem to have some bugs.

Anyone watch the Keynote yet? I had a feeling the new Powerbooks (I think Macbook sounds funny) would be released today since some PC manufacturers are about to ship dualcore laptops.

I don't disagree with you in principle, but I can't think of a recent example of first-gen bugs with Apple machines (last 5 years or so.) :err:

Such is life. Computers are the worst investment.

I hear ya. I'm a total bottom feeder when it comes to computers.

I typically wait until I can significantly upgrade my PC setup for a few hundred bucks every couple years.

But I can't wait to see what the Mac-Intel towers will be capable of, albeit from the sidelines, a few rows back. ;)

The Rev A PowerMacs had Firewire problems I'm pretty sure. If I remember correctly it was only the ones on the front.

And the first gen iMac G5's had overheating problems causing the PSU's to fry I believe, also problems with hard drives, cheap capacitors and video problems.
Apple fixed this by replacing all the faulty ones free of charge.

And I remember problems with late 2004 models where the CD drive wouldn't open after 2 hours of using the computer, and the computer would freeze during video intensive useage. That was later fixed with updates.

Well, I too, bought a G4 PB running at 1.67 GHz. But if they say it is 4x faster...it must be close to that. But even if it isn't exactly 4x faster than the old ones...whatever. Apples are great and probably will stay that way no matter what kind of processor is in them. Period.
