I want to know everything I can do to improve this

There are no vocals yet, but this is my very first mix

This is sounding pretty good for a first mix. Bring the kick's low end down, or dial back on the compression, it's pumping fairly hard at some parts. The whole mix, the guitars in particular, sound like it's just a bit too scooped in the 5-600hz range. At 1:36, the sub frequencies get huge and everything starts to sound a little pumpy/muddy, so maybe dial back on some of the bass in that part.

Agree with everything oroinvictus said. This is very very damn good for a first mix, love it. How'd you learn so quick?

original post has been edited to include new track doing exactly what oroinvictus advised. was it enough to help? and is there something else you can think of?

Better. The lead line going on at the start is a bit too dry (0:30s), I'd add a bit of verb on there to make it sit in the mix a bit more. Is your crash clipping? Just sounds a bit distorted to me. Drums are still a bit too pumpy.

(P.S. Reading what? 'cause that's awesome progress for a first mix!)

hmmm.... guitars are too scooped. they are clear still yes, but this leaves you with no sonic room left to work with all your other tones.... thats why your snare sounds boxy, its actually doesnt sound that bad, but in your mix, the guitars kill it. overheads are too compressed and your release time is pretty off. your drum verb is not pleasant either. go through all your verbs for every project, pick the best one for drums. my suggestions are to strive to get your drums sounding like major productions... everything will come in time.

The snare sounds a bit loud and dry, try bringing it down and adding a 'verb to it to get it nice and wide. The kick is still pumping a bit at parts, my suggestion is to play around with the compression a bit, or possibly take a little high-end slap out of the kick and throw in some click. The cymbals could also stand to sit a little lower, personally.

hmm, i think what im gona say has already been said probably...it all sounds really sick, apart from the kick drum and the snare.

i saw up there ^^ somewhere that you learned most of this from reading alot. although that is a good way of getting started, you cant take someone elses word as gospel. what i mean is, if you take one sample of a snare, mix it til it sound perfect, you then make a preset of those mixing settings. if you then replace the snare sample with a different one, chances are the new sample will have been recorded in a completely different environmet to the first snare, so your presets will not work very well for the new sample. you gota just fuck around until it sounds sick.

and so, what i would say is definitely pull the snare down in the mix, alot! take out some of the mids, coz it sounds like it is going "pah" instead of "KAH", if you know what i mean. if needbe, also add a tad of high end to it. and for my taste, i would add a slight bit of verb to it.

the kick just needs a lot less volume (and so do the toms actually) and compression.

doing this to all the drums will probably make the cymbals comparatively loud, so you may have to take those down a bit too.

all in all, a nice first mix though :)

Definitely going to be working on these things tonight when I get home.

But I just wanted to post to thank everyone for being such a help. Its definitely helping out a lot.

Mix 4 is much better. Personally I might add in a bit more 'verb on the snare, but that's just me. I think if you brought up the kick just a tiny bit and made that snare nice and wet-sounding this mix would be 100%.
