If one thing can be said about Incinerate Disintegrate, the first EP release from Sweden’s Flagellation, it is that the band is not afraid of crafting their own sound. A noble task indeed, especially in this day and age of derivative influence-channeling rubbish. The exciting thing about Flagellation’s unique aural approach is that it combines seemingly incompatible aspects of the metal genre rather effortlessly. On the one hand the band plays unrelenting technical death metal with a speed as furious as some of the genre’s most extreme while on the other they are able to introduce epic keyboards and clean classic heavy metal vocals into the mix without softening their sound. This is still death metal folks, just with epic keyboard flourishes and occasional soaring vocals. Flagellation is able to pull all of this together by utilizing a penchant for accessible, yet not shallow, songwriting capabilities.

If a comparison can be drawn to another band (not a simple task in this case) Denmark’s Mercenary somewhat fits the bill. Think of the aformentioned’s 11 Dreams album but played more ‘death metaly’, more aggressively and more ‘epicly’ and you may be able to form an idea of the sound Flagellation is striving for.

On the production side, the band opts for a super-slick contemporary approach, a choice I normally abhor for death metal but due to the grandiose nature and large scope of Flagellation’s sound it is fitting. This is because it allows for all the instruments to sound audible and clear while still producing that addictive ‘wall of sound’ style. If the band can continue to explore and build on this adventurous foundation that they have established with Incinerate Disintegrate there is little doubt in my mind that will grab the attention of many a metalhead. Until then though, Incinerate Disintegrate should provide just enough material to satiate fans of unique epic death metal.
