Fleshcrawl – Structures of Death
Metal Blade Records - SPV CD 085-105662 - September 21, 2007
By Axemaiden
Sounding like the wickedly evil bastard offspring of the speed and ferocity of Slayer (bar the epic soloing) and the crushing heaviness of Nile and Dismember, Fleshcrawl have vomited forth another album which is guaranteed to keep on gaining them more fans. Structures of Death continues in the same vein as their most recent earlier releases but the band’s music has fortunately not fallen into the ‘generic’ category and has managed to remain fresh (or as fresh as corpse-riddled death metal can be) and still interesting even after a fairly hardcore 20 years of recording and touring. Although the band’s sound has evolved over the decades this most recent album showcases them as an even more tight-knit unit than previously and is full of strong songs that show they are certainly not losing their talent. The best songs on the album include ‘Structures of Death’ and ‘War of the Dead’ which are relentless, guitar driven assaults on the senses and ‘Into the Fire of Hell’ which makes use of a strange, almost Spanish style intro riff which works surprisingly well with the ruthless drumming. Not every song is perfect, for example ‘Rest in Pain’ is a bit of a stereotypical death metal offering without much going on of interest, but on the whole the album is strong. The most outstanding thing about Structures of Death is definitely the drumming, which is absolutely brutal and hopefully fans should appreciate this latest release.
