Flo super drumming

I'm almost certain it's real. It doesn't really look like it's sped up, check out the way the cymbals move, for instance. Also, he does some insane gravity blasts, that explains the lightning fast snare drum hits.

YES. I have seen this man do this right in front of me. It is 100% real time. He is in fact, not human. My absolute idol for drumming, and a very nice guy to boot.

I know he's utterly awesome (one of the fastest drummers out there), but that solo just does nothing for me! the bit towards the end is face-meltingly fast though! Personally, I think (much like Derek Roddy) that he uses to much cymbal, generally. AMAZING drummer though. he's at that amazing point where he can play absolutely anything he wants!

too much cymbal, that part at the end was pretty insane though....his movements almost look sped-up but the way the cymbals move definitely looks normal, that's insane

what are "gravity blasts"?

I am pretty floored by his speed, but do not like his sound. He is definetelly a pro, but not enough oomph in his style ... and his skill gets kind of lost in Cryptopsy's music ... I like more groove in my drumming.

This is why to this day Sandoval is tough to beat ... totally memorable blasting.

Drumming is more about a nice feel, be it mechanical or organic that fits and embellishes the music. If speed fits, great, but not many drummers do it well. Some that do a very good job IMO; Dave Lombardo, Trym, Proscriptor and whoever the drummer is for Eucharist on Velvet Creation (I listened to this a few times the last few days, it fits the music VERY nicely)

i'll listen to this when i get home.

Ill explain gravity blasts lurch.

Its a relatively simply technique that is basically a one handed rim roll on the snare incorporated into a blast beat. Your right hand does a double stroke off the snare using the rim by a simple up/down motion of your hand. With the left hand, Flo often bounces off the high-hat and a crash cymbal, and throughs some blistering double bass in there. I recently just developed the technique myself. Its easy to learn, but more difficult to incorporate in a song, as you have to have you hand positioned just right on the stick and the snare.

About his style, you guys should listen to more of his music, he has a lot more variety than almost any death metal drummer out there. He's also involved in some Jazz drumming projects. This is where I shamlessly plug his DVD. If you are a drummer at all, not just a death metal drummer, you should buy his instructional DVD. It has TONS of important stuff like warm-ups, stetching, technique, speed and endurance exercises, etc.

thanks ... i would really like to take some drum lessons ... don't want to be in a band or anything, but just for the heck of it play sometimes.
this kind of style intrigues me

yeah so it takes a lot to impress me these days because at this point i've seen so much virtuosity that i'm pretty well jaded, but that dude just kicked my dick in. so this is the dude from Cryptopsy, eh? *searches CD-R pile*

i still maintain that that is speeded up ... something about his body movement that does not look natural

that would take some real trick sound manipulation if it was, and like others have said, the cymbal movement works against that theory. fucker moves like a vampire.

It may look that way, but I have physically stood two feet from his drumkit and watched him acheive speeds that fast before. The first time I saw it live my jaw was suspended in mid-air for a few minutes.
