Focusrite Saffire input gain question

I'm sorry to make this thread, but I couldn't find any others.

I'm having the typical "focusrite saffire hi-z input clipping/no headroom" problem for DI guitars. I'm using some pretty hot passives pups into the hi-z with the -8 db pad engaged, yet my signal is peaking (with heavy palm-mutes) at around 1-2 on the meters with input gain at zero or one.

My question is this: can I get away with keeping the input gain at zero? It's not clipping at zero gain (I have a little headroom), but it is definitely way too hot for my usual preferences. It sounds fine to me when I play it through X50 and the waveform isn't clipped (just big dynamic peaks), but I'm wondering if it would be better if my DI's had more headroom on the way in.

Fellow saffire owners, let me know what you think.

Also, I might be in the market for another interface if this keeps giving me problems (I have syncing issues too). Maybe suggest a similar interface to a pro 26 in a similar price range (firewire/thunderbolt, good hi-z, stable with mac).
