For The UK Members: Rage Against The Machine As Christmas No 1

I still think this was pretty damn pointless. The X-Factor singles shifted anyway. Why should that Powell dude even care? He makes money from shifted units, not chart positions. RATM must be laughing their asses off and it's a win-win for Sony.

Topples a monopoly on the christmas chart position and proves that all the money, advertising and tv time in the world won't buy you a guaranteed UK no 1 chart position, it's not going to bother Cowell so much as undermine him.

yeah, even though it won't change anything, i have to admit it is strangely refreshing hearing something being announced as christmas number 1 that isn't the x-factor winner, and i guess that's the point overall. i doubt anyone cares that simons still made money, its just so we can feel like we arent having the piss taken out of us year in year out

Wont it though? Lets have a think for some things that have happened in the UK music scene this year:

2009: Iron Maiden won a Brit Award despite being up against mainstream chart artists, Download Festival sells out for the first time, RATM get to Xmas number 1.

I feel this is just the latest in a series of events that points to a large movement in the UK music scene. In 2007 Enter Shikari got their debut album to number 4 despite not being signed to a record label (I know most on here don't like them but that's beside the point) Bands like The Gallows and Bring Me The Horizon are getting played on daytime Radio 1.

So maybe, just maybe, there's a change happening here. Traditionally the UK market has been quite influential in the music industry as a whole, so it could encourage a worldwide trend. If the record labels take notice of what's going on then there's a small possibility of them pushing some more decent rock bands in the future.

Chances are though, that the only thing changing will be record labels starting facebook campaigns for their artists to get to no.1 next year.

At the very least it should make things more interesting in the future as we have shown that Xfactor CAN be beaten!
