Any general advice in terms of jobs, economics, etc. for us soon to be alumni? I will be done my undergrad come this April so I have to start thinking seriously about what I am doing after that.

Not that it matters but I am taking a Liberal Arts degree (Film Studies and Comm Studies) so I will have next to no practical knowledge for a particular industry.

kthxbai.

You're screwed. Go to graduate school.

that's what I'm doing...except because I want to teach college level composition :erk:

anyway. Death Aflame, where do you live? I live in Los Angeles, and, naturally, this place is crawling with film and theater related jobs. There's going to be a HUGE new movie studio opening in Long Beach within the next few years. What you need to do is just come out here, get one gig and then start meeting every possible person...it's all about whoring yourself and getting to know as many contacts as possible.

I'm also screwed.[/English major] I'm fairly content with that. I know at least that there are some jobs that are now open to me simply because I have a college degree from a decent school. I have no plans for the future though. I'd rather not think about it until it comes to me.

I've had no luck finding work in Chicago that I'm qualified for, so I will probably have to settle for taking an unpaid internship that I'm overqualified for. The job world is really geared for kids of wealthier people who can afford to rack up these internships during their college years/summers. People who have to work to help pay for their education are at a pretty big disadvantage if that work doesn't help you find a job later.

I also dislike this whole "networking" thing, which hasn't helped me out. I'm not interested in bullshitting.

I am from Southern Ontario, probably one of the worst places in NA for anything to do with the entertainment industry. But thanks for the advice, anyhow. And I guess I lied, because I did take a 'practical' course in the business of the film industry, so I do have some people I could contact in that regard. I have also made some contact with a local game company who likes to hire film studies grads for some apparent reason.

In terms of grad school everyone keeps telling me to go, especially professors and my peers, but I am just not sure. I think I could probably get into a decent program since I generally have fairly solid grades and this year I have been working as an academic writing tutor, but I just don't know if that's the path I want to pursue.

One thing about university that I have found is that it has made me hate most of the institutions in our society (just see the anarchism thread) so not only do I not have very many practical skills, I also despise most of the organizations that could possibly hire me.

Ah well, I guess I should make a trip to my local career centre and see what they have to say about all this.

Do you graduate in the spring?

I graduated in May this year, with a degree in video production/film and have been looking for a job pretty much ever since. I was hoping to get an entry level job on a few of the sets that have been sprouting up around CT, but no such luck, and now we're in the slow period.

I've gotten close on a few places that weren't exactly in the industry, but still worked in production. Of course, with the economy as it is jobs in many fields are quite slim. Just keep looking and hopefully something will open up.

Where did you attend in Chicago. I have been looking at schools a lot recently. I have good grades(3.9 GPA which is a B+/A-) and I take AP classes, on the debate team, newspaper and will be going for wrestling next year. I was looking University of Chicago and that is INSANE to get into. I was looking at DePaul but it is a shit school. So it looks like I will be attending Loyola. Where did you go? Advice?

Secondary Ed. major, currently. Pairing it with a Latin major, so I'm guaranteed a teaching job somewhere before I get my PhD.

Northwestern. Not any easier to get into than U of C. I'm not sure why you think DePaul isn't any good. I think it tends to rank higher than Loyola, and it's in a better part of town. What you plan on studying matters too, of course.

UChicago is ranked as one of the utmost best colleges in the world along with Harvard and Oxford. I know a kid who just got accepted into Harvard but denied from UChicago. Northwestern is ace. What were your high school grades and shit. Any advice? I plan to apply there also.

I also am looking into NYU.
