There's a few people who make movies around here, what cameras do you use? Are there webcams good enough for this or is that just wishful thinking? Although it may not be the primary use, I'd like to be able to capture live video, something like Ola's song film clips.

can't go wrong with a T2i. I know literally nothing about cameras, but from what I do know is that your better off going with a camera that is more of a traditional camera (the kinds that have manual focus, that thing you twist left and right to get in focus with what your filming.) They look so much better than something like a handycam

Again I really don't know too much but hopefully someone else can chime in

my EOS 600D can make full HD videos and they look great.
with a bit of tweaking in sony vegas, or another video editing software you can get really good results,
at least this video looks really awesome for me.

Thanks for the info. That's what I had read, but talking to some people they said it's 'not a problem'. That ain't gonna fly if I'm doing a one camera live shoot. I can understand it being workable if your doing a music video or something, but damn I shot a punk fest with a friend a year or so ago and have at least 12hours of footage. No way in hell I'm gonna stock up 12hrs worth of sd cards. ugh.

I'm still looking at the Canon HV200 as a possible super cheap HD DV option.

So you recommend a DSLR over say a handy cam? I must admit I hadn't thought of that. I'd probably get more use out of it for photos as well.

Newest-generation DSLRs shoot great video in full HD cinema framerates (24 fps) without much or any rolling shutter issues like previous DSLRs. Add on the ability to swap out tons of different kinds of glass (a feature only seen on much more expensive camcorders) and you get a lot of bang for your buck. Typing on this ipad is dreadfully slow.

Panasonic gh2 with the hack > all those listed

12 min rec times ftmfl

Please explain. What is your max 1080 HD video time?

I mention the HV200 since you can get one for about $200, shoot HD in 24p, and also can get a 35mm adapter to fit different lenses for shallow DOF or whatever. There are some new HV's like the 300 and 400, but the 200 is cheapest. I like cheap.

32gb card at 1080p (not I), 25 mb/s (but goes up to 66 I believe) can do 3+ hours. Drop the bit rate and you can double it. My gf2 (non-hack) does 4 hours in 720p at 17 mb/s. and 3/4 to 35mm adapters are cheap and almost any lense fits.

Image quality/clarity will be much sharper on a gh2 but if you want to spend the least, go hv.

Where in the hell are you finding Panasonic HV200s for $200?

haha I was thinking the same thing! but I think he's talking about the cannon hv20 not the panasonic hvx200

yeah look into the cannon hv20/30/40. but I think the hv40 is the only one out of those 3 that shoots in 24p but I've seen great stuff shot on all of those.

I ended up getting a panasonic dvx100b for the studio. looks really great and works good in low light too. not hd but the footage still looks really good. I've checked out some music videos shot on the dvx100b and upsampled to hd and it looks great.
