For Zod; resurrecting our Fergie discussion

She actually sounds really good on that song. The whole album pretty much kicks major ass. My favorite song being Back From Cali with Myles Kennedy.

One of the best songs that has been pushed a lot (and meaning a lot I mean I've seen a few ads) here in the states (Florida) was the Alice Cooper w/ Nicole Scherzinger tune "Baby Can't Drive" which isn't on the US release. Ugh. What's the point of running promos in Best Buys with that song if it's only released on the UK version? Morons.

Anyhow, I bought the album, downloaded the import tracks (5 in all) so I only feel slightly ripped off and slightly criminal.

That's really fucking weird that they would advertise the album with that song and it's not even on the main US version. I actually ordered the Classic Rock mag + album edition as it has the bonus tracks and has a whole mag on the guy which should be interesting.

Hey Bro... I'm assuming the two videos are meant to demonstrate that Fergie can pull off live what she does in studio. If that's the case, the videos demonstrate that. However, to be fair, it's not exactly like she's performing Flight of Icarus in studio and then pulling it off live.

I was watching the Kenny Wayne Shepherd DVD (10 Days Out) the other day, where Kenny travels all over the south and interviews a number of old time Blues players, most of which are now between 70 and 90+ years of age. During Kenny's interview with Brian Lee, a blind guitar player who gave Kenny his first shot, Brian spoke about what made him give Kenny that first shot. In essence, he said it was because he couldn't see Kenny, and went on to suggest that music should most often be appreciated without any visual. Which brings me back to my overall problem with Fergie, the Black Eyed Peas and Pop music is general; their music is meant to be visual. In the pre-MTV world, these "artists" would likely have never been given record contracts. There's a reason female vocalists once looked like Janis Joplin and Barbara Streisand and now look like porn stars. Let's be fair, we've likely both seen strippers take the stage wearing more clothing than Fergie has on in that video. Music use to be about music, and really only the music. Of course, there were always exceptions to that rule, as there are to every rule. However, now it's the exception when it happens in reverse. Look at the waves Susan Boyle created. The world was stunned that an ugly person might have "talent", because we've been conditioned to believe that talented people look like runway models.

In the end, if you enjoy Fergie, that's cool. However, it's not for me.

You have nailed it on the head bro.

There is no doubt that Fergie can sing. However, does she sing so much better than say, one of the girls from the local high school glee club? Maybe, maybe not. I am willing to bet I can find large quantities of women that have far superior vocal and songwriting skills that may never get even the remotest chance of success simply because they arent a size 0. It is her image that sells her more than her voice. This image is carefully crafted by the powerful moneymen in the business whose primary job is to create that image in order to ensure records are sold. That is not so much the fault of the business, so much as it is the fault of the masses that overlook higher quality art for art that doesn't look as good as it sounds.

I'm just working on the beer deal is all.... :)

I would say Fergie would have been big in the 80s based off her last solo album, Pink as well on her 2nd release. Joplin they are not, but there are some pretties who can sing.

Understood, you're not Fergalicious :heh: but I think she did a pretty good job in a rock setting.

Did we have a deal?

The 80s wasn't much better. That was the birth of MTV and style over substance. Could they have made it in the 70s? Probably not.

So just to reiterate (at least I think it's a reiteration), it's really not about her being a talentless hack. If I said as much or inferred as much, it was for dramatic effect. Ultimately, my point is, there's nothing about her voice, her musicianship, her songwriting, etc. that suggests her annual income should be greater than the combined incomes of every musician whose ever played ProgPower. She's a very average singer in hooker boots, with a multinational conglomerate marketing "her" music and paying the salaries of the dozens of people in the background, to ensure she moves product. Which again, doesn't mean that end product has no value, it's just not my thing.

Zod, I 100% agree with everything you've said in this thread. I've never really thought about the comparison between the pre-MTV and post-MTV eras, but you're right. With the exception of KISS, the 70's music scene wasn't necessarily about image.

Did we have a deal?

Not really, but beers were mentioned in an earlier thread.. I think it was called.. why do people like this crap, but it was about some crap rap band and it took a tangent out towards Fergie.

There were no other implications from you other than that she wasn't your cup of tea.. I just though it would be fun to post it to spice up some good discussions.

Zod, metal bands are often just as image conscious as pop music. And based on many posts on this forum, so are the fans. It is just a different image. Both are selling a fantasy.

The bottom line is, the live version is terrible! I don't know how anyone in their right mind would think that this song is a good pop song. Slash's playing is average at best and the same goes for Fergie's vocals. I didn't bother with the studio version, because I don't care.

Someone mentioned Janet Jackson's song, Black Cat. In my opinion, Black Cat is a great song. Plus, Janet didn't have to look like a stripper to bring a rock attitude to the song or the video. By the way, not that I'm complaining that Fergie looks like a stripper! Fergie just looks like she's having to try a bit hard to me though.

Keep in mind it was a BEP show and Slash was a guest, I think the whole band looks like strippers on tour.. I think it's a requirement. :)

The studio version is better, but that guy's camera was pretty good.

I completely disagree. Regardless, I take no issue with bands trying to cultivate a look or an image. I take issue when that look trumps the music. In Metal, with very, very few exceptions, that's never the case.

And based on many posts on this forum, so are the fans.
True... but not nearly to the same degree. Look at the bands who are held in the highest regard among the forum:

Brainstorm
Edguy
Circus Maximus
Pagan's Mind

Do you honestly believe that 1/1,000th the amount of time goes into prepping these bands for a show that goes into prepping Fergie? Are any Metal fans buying clothing because they saw Andy wearing it? The importance assigned to image, relative to music (in Metal), is in no way comparable to Pop music.

Both are selling a fantasy.
What fantasy is Circus Maximus selling? If you practice 16 hours a day, for the next twenty years, and go into debt to finance your tours, you too can wallow in obscurity. Because everyone knows... chicks dig obscurity. :loco:

While listening to that live track I could help but keep thinking about Axel Rose

Glad he wasn't on the stage wearing that outfit :Puke:

I totally wanted to buy the cow-pants that Tobias from Edguy was wearing, just never found a place that had those.

Some of the best female vocalist of the 60's in my opinion:

Nico - Velvet Underground
Patti Santos - It's a Beautiful day
Grace Slick - Jefferson Airplane
Janis Joplin - Big Brother and the holding Company
Cass Elliot - Mammas and Pappas
