Forty Fucking Years

Black Sabbath is the first band that can be recognized as a "metal" band. Before that there were heavy bands, but no bands that played in a style that eventually was classified as metal; Sabbath was the first.

Zeppelin is not metal.

Sabbath was the first metal band to bring distortion and what have you to metal, they were not the first in general. They were the first "extreme developing" band.

Can you just stop posting? It's really fucking bothering me. I'm gonna put you on ignore now, because I haven't seen a worthwhile post from you ever, but you are undeniably fucking up my thread with moronic statements that have been thoroughly and repeatedly disproved in previous threads. So...just fucking stop.

JG, please stop. While all the bands you mentioned were influential in starting metal, it wasn't until Black Sabbath that metal finally became a full recognizable and separate genre, as opposed to loud acid/psychedelic/blues rock. Stop derailing the thread. Black Sabbath started metal. eod

:headbang: :kickass:

Hey, don't be mis leaded and give all the credit to Sabbath, they paved the pathway to extreme metal and brang in the crowd, thats all they did.

Fuck you JG. I agree with WAIF you can eat a dick for derailing this thread. Eat all the fucking dicks.

Just stop posting.

I will gladly give all the credit to Iommi and the gang. And I will gladly and admiringly suck his dick for somehow coming up with metal.

Dig up the origins, and listen to those bands. Spread the respect. Thats what its all about, respect goes to all the endeavors.

But, I don't care what you do in the long run, if you want to blank out the facts and think its Sabbath, go right ahead. But you can't erase history.

I actually just looked up all the bands you listed. Vanilla Fudge, Cream, Iron Butterfly, etc none of them sound metal at all. I'm not saying any of them are bad at all. I'm just saying they're not metal, though they certainly had an influence on Sabbath. Let's not derail the thread. Take this debate to the controversial opinions thread.

Let us instead dedicate this thread to the celebration of 40 years of metal, posting all those great moments in metal from the past 40 years, maybe with a focus on the classic bands...

It is early metal, before Sabbath came along. :p

Well thats how I put it, its definitly a bit heavier than some 60s bands. You also have some songs from certain artists back then that influenced metal and what have you. Go ahead and do research, its good to obtain more knowledge. Like they say, "The More You Know".

You can't just reject the "they don't sound like metal at all" argument by just redefining "early metal" to include them..

I would most certainly not call those bands metal. I'm sure they had some influence on Sabbath, but imo Sabbath created the "metal sound" and really paved the way for heavy metal in the world.

Either way, Sabbath has had an undeniably HUGE influence on metal and to try and discredit that, you might as well get the fuck out of metal.

I am not discrediting Sabbath's influence, I am just saying they weren't the first band. There is never a first band, but theres always first bands. :p

I've seen an actual doco about the origins of hard/heavy rock,it claimed to have traced it back all the way through blues,Chuck Berry,Robert Johnson ect,all the fucking way back to Africa...Sabbath surely were the first Metal band,i don't think WAIF intended on having a debate in this thread,it's more about recognising Sabbath as the legendary and first true metal band that they were...so here's to another 40 years, poor old Ozzy might be well and truely fucked by then.

i'll happily go with consensus on this, there's a large division between sabbath & the likes of blue cheer/cream/iron butterfly/jeff beck/grand funk/led zep/whoever else you want to name. sabbath represent a mighty step forward and there's enough room for a clear, thick line in there. also got no issue with people calling the above bands heavy metal either , i just think claiming that black sabbath DEFINITELY WERE NOT THE FIRST METAL BAND is just as narrow-minded and unjustifiable as saying they definitely were.
