Hi,
The best for me is delete the roar between the tom fills and fade out the last tom being hit in each fill, all the attack is there and it will really clean up the drums. It may take time but its the best and well worth it!
The snare is the real beast that really depends on the drummer to be well seasoned and aware of the type of music being recorded and of course mic placement!
For a gate just sidechain an eq so that it only opens with the fundamental note of the tom. Then compress and eq to taste! Try some tape saturation as the first insert as it compresses the signal a bit and makes it more consistent befor it hits the gate or comp! Massey tape saturation is great for this if you are in Protools!
