jesus christ, that's close....i'd say B is the real amp because there seems to be more dynamic response, sounds less flat that A.....but it might as well be the increased lowend on clip B that's fooling me

Who plays classic rock on a Herbert? :guh:

Either way, I'm quite impressed, they sound very close. Was the Axe FX used direct, or was it recorded through a power amp/cab?

I think A is the real amp. B sounds somehow cleaner, making me think it's the axe. That being said I actually prefer the sound of B. A is a little more "fuzzy round the edges" sounding.

Modelling fails at palm mutes!!! idc what company, no one has been able to pull off the way a real amp chunks.
and yet... i dont really like the way either one sounds:erk:

I'll guess B is the real amp. All the differences between the two would be lost in a mix on the average listener though.

So you wouldn't venture to guess which one is the real amp then? Btw, he didn't ask if you liked the tone in the clips.

OP: Please don't reveal results until this guy makes a guess. :)

I also guess B is the amp. they are pretty close, but I don't like either.
I know the Herbert is able to do better

Haha, damn right

I shall hold on until this evening then before revealing! The poll results are very interesting.

Hold on a minute man. I voted A when i posted that.... it didn't say you had to reveal what u voted:)
But seriously, right or wrong, real or fake, the two tones don't seem very usuable.

Exactly. I posted this on the Axe-Fx forum where Cliff is commenting also.

"Dunno if that's the best Diezel tone I've ever heard. Would be cool to have someone tweaking the amp who's played one of these actively for years. You know.. you'd get to model the sweetspot of the amp."

Same goes for the Orange Rockerverb model in the Axe-Fx. It clearly hasn't got even the same gain stage as the real thing. Did he even touch the gain knob on a real Rockerverb? Why don't we ever question the mans ability to tweak these real amps before he models them? Should be more like: "show him what the diezel tone is" and then let him model that sound. :)

Right, he didn't ask for you to reveal your answer, I did. FWIW, I agree the sounds are not very good. But, again, whether or not the sound is "usable" is irrespective of the A/B asking which is the real amp.

Besides, if there is no way a modeler can compare, as you more or less said, shouldn't the real amp shine through between the two, regardless of the tone being usable? Does a real amp magically not sound like a real amp when someone has it dialed poorly? Those are rhetorical questions, by the way.

I see where you are coming from, but I think...rhetorical or not, the way a real or simulated amp is dialed in makes all the difference. Each can sound great or awful depending on the setup.
That said, A and B sound pretty close. I won't argue about the magic of tube amps...but there is something to be said about them when dialed correctly. The same could be said for the axefx too.

You can get a crap tone outa almost anything if you try hard enough;)

I just mean to point out that the tone being good or not is subjective to the listener, the characteristics of a real amp compared to a modeler are not, that's all. A real amp with shitty settings is still a real amp. Good guess btw.
