Using the base term "American" to describe anything but "The United States Of America" which is the only country that actually calls itself American is just stupidly vague. So there are no "American" countries; there are North and South American countries. They are recognized to be different continents, unlike Western and Eastern Europe. That's the difference. You're implying that I have some kind of dislike for Canadians or do not want to be associated with them. On the contrary, I love the country and have vacationed there multiple times.
