Free recording, am I digging myself an early grave?

ORLY. Might have to call you on that one sometime ;)

You aren't in my locality(luckily) Ermz!
Not many people really record bands round these parts, and if they do, they usually don't do anything heavy.
And their are quite a few heavyish bands in the south east of Victoria that are looking to record some shit, then they end up going to Melbourne to record.

I won't deal with shitty drummers for free.
That is not only annoying to me, but to people around me.
If they expect this and can't play their music dead on then their is no chance.

Sorry for my rape of the use of the word their/there, i'm in a little bit of an altered state of mind atm.

The free stuff is the only stuff I will really be doing programmed for.
Payed stuff I will put in the effort to record real drums and get them sounding good.

Hey man I think starting out doing free recordings is one of the best ways to get started, you just need to know when to draw the line. Myself, I did that for a period of about 6 months. Then started charging around $200 per song, I did that for another 6 months then ended up in the interesting situation of getting a whole bunch of work over the christmas period and no where to record it (had to move house etc), so I looked into setting up a commercial studio. Basically what I found, extremely luckily I might add was two rooms next to eachother at a a really high profile rehearsal studio (caters for touring international bands when needed), that a previous owner converted into a recording studio. Now I'm charging $40 an hour and I feel that now I have made the jump to being more professional, bands appreciate that and am getting a lot more work than I was working for free out of home.

It's really just one step in a whole manner of things in this business that you need to get started. I'd say go for it and good luck!

I looked around at local bands etc. and everything they have is SHIT(not to sound super arrogant).
But these kids are paying for something to promote their band, and they aren't getting what they pay for.
I can literally spit out a demo in an hour that sounds better than a lot of the local guys are doing.

This alone is the reason I was able to set up and get going so quickly in my area. All the "studios" around here seem to be middle-aged guys with too much money, and not enough skill. They rip people off (young people with no money, I might add) for a terrible terrible product, all because they look the part.

Go for it dude, do it for your local music scene and for the kids who are struggling. You will be the "go to" guy for up and coming bands in no time!

If there is a niche you can fill, do it, as mentioned above. I saw the gap here in Melb, and took it. Now there's work pouring out of my ass... actually trying to reschedule myself so I don't have to do any more straight weeks of 16 hour days. Haven't had a real week-end in months. Almost going insane, haha.

So all you have to go is break through, do some quality work - prove yourself and develop a reputation. I can't recall whether the Untruth guys are over your way or not... Mt Elisa, I always forget whether that's west or east. But I know there are apparently big hardcore scenes in the rural areas. The Untruth boys are pulling 600 a night from what I hear.
