The majority of Americans I know fucking hate Christmas. It's the most stressful time of the year.
I like the wintery aspect of it, along with the food and stuff...but that's about it. I get insanely irritated when people say shit like, "Christmas is the time of year to help your fellow man" and bullshit like that. Why? Why can't we be helpful to each other EVERY DAY, not just once a year?
I like all the lights and snow and seasonal stuff...but the music has seriously got to go. I don't like to receive gifts anymore, not even on my birthday because I don't like people doing other things for me simply out of tradition. I'm a weird one, I know.
Plus, unless it's a new guitar, amp, record deal, computer, or things of the like, I'd rather get them when I want and not have to wait once a fucking year. I hated that shit as a kid. Finally, my Mom listened to me one time and bought me something that I wanted really badly quite early. I told her that I wouldn't ask for anything for Xmas if she got me that, and she did and I didn't ask for anything. Ok, she got me a few stocking stuffers like a new cd, some candy, and some winter socks for hunting or some shit like that, but that was it and I was happy. I finally got it across to her that I don't give a shit about Christmas presents...if I want something, I'm going to buy it and not make a big fucking deal out of it. Anyone else agree?

i dunno... i really haven't heard all that much xmas music so far. i guess it's because i don't have a job in retail currently. well, that'll probobly change in a few weeks and then i'll want to take a drill to my head, but for now it's cool. i actually started singing xmas songs last weekend when i was home and will wanted to punch in the stomach.
i like the older songs, even the jesus-y ones. but the crappy new novelty songs annoy the fuck out of me.

Seriously though... do you really think people are going to treat others the way they do around the holidays throughout the entire year? No, it won't happen. Without the holidays, people probably wouldn't even consider being helpful to others anymore than they are during non-holiday times. I'm not sure how I feel about that.
I like the lights too. In fact, I have them up around my apartment year round. Subtle lighting is my favorite and xmas lights are perfect for it. Speaking of, I need to go get some new ones soon.
I think the whole present aspect is a bit lame as well. When I was younger, it was cooler because I was always excited about new toys and video games and what-not, but nowadays I almost feel guilty when my family buys me stuff just because it's a holiday. This year is the first year I've done something about it. When my mom asked me what I wanted for Christmas I told her... "I want you to take the money you'd spend on presents for me and give it to a homeless shelter or something." Whether she'll do it or not is beyond me, but I imagine that much like your family, I'll end up with some small stocking type stuff, and that's fine.
The bottom line is that if your family is happy and you all love each other and get along then Christmas is just sort of a fun way to celebrate that and be together with each other for a while. There doesn't have to be any sort of religious relation at all.
p.s. As for the music... it doesn't bother me much, but I don't have to deal with it constantly either.

I can't stand the stuff either, even when I liked Christmas the music drove me nuts. But, I think anyone that has ever worked at a chain restaurant, or retail will pretty much hate it for the rest of their lives.

Of course, I love getting, but It didn't matter what you said, even if it was don't get me anything, you never got what you really wanted just somthing you couldn't use or pants that were too long. And my mom is a non receipt keeper. So you were stuck with those long pants, or getting them hemmed and we all know how good that looks! hahah, especially on jeans. I don't give or get anymore, or decorate. All I do is have people over, make food, and go over to Ham-Bones house to help her make cookies. Most years (Not this one) I make a shit load of cookies to give to people, but haven't done that in recent years. That is the only thing about this time of year I enjoy doing and am a little bummed if I can't.
Maybe it's the differences in region, or just the people I know, but I find that people are grouchy and irritable this time of year.
