Fucking awesome...

i don't think he's ever said that he NEVER LISTENED to manowar, only that they weren't a huge influence... but yeah... they were
You might be right, and i might be confusing it with the "i never listened to Venom" thing, which im sure (well almost) that he said many times.

Seriously, this is like, if Celtic Frost was half asleep and mostly drugged. How boring!

Bwahahaha...

CF > Manowar
(not by much)

I think I might remember listening to "Hail to England" about 5 years ago and I don't remember it being too terrible.

But man, Triumph of Steel... :yuk:

yeah he said that, that he hadn't listened to venom WHEN he wrote the first bathory album. he did hear them a couple of years later but never became a fan, apparently

If this was really loud and I was full of Heffeweizen, I could totally see myself enjoying heavy metal in general.

:kickass: :loco:

But seriously, everyone 'knows of' Manowar for their latter day cheesy arena singalong stuff, but the early albums are quite innocent tbh. Just honest to goat heavy metal (all leading towards Manilla Road, Slough Feg, Omen, etc -- that ballpark of US metal anyway).

Right, but you know why this is right? For the most part, people avoid Manowar like the fucken black plague of gay brokeback death.
As I said to Mark, without Eric's amazing voice to add power, [assion, conviction and sincerity to Joey's silly lyrics and Manowar's mediocre (at best) music, Manowar would have come and gone before 1985.

Yeah but they never truly took off in the first place did they? THAT imagery overshadows the vocals, and so people steer clear -- even lots of power metal fans. Either that or people are afraid to admit they like Manowar just because of the inevitable backlash, so they listen in secret like any guilty pleasure.

I don't really care about their image, though it's so easy to make fun of.

They're just mindless no-songwriting metal WITH ATTITUDE that does nothing for me at all...

For the record, I love Iron Maiden and other "true" metal bands of that ilk. But man, Manowar sucks.

I guess that's a matter of opinion. I don't think this band was ever built for mainstream sucess, especially in the U.S. Also consider, 99% of their contemporaries have gone the way of the dinasour. Yet these guys still pack houses overseas, and draw as well as any Metal band in the U.S. (from their era), save Priest and Maiden (and perhaps one or two others). And given that I get the feeling that these guys are pretty well set financially, that aint too bad.

Yes I agree 100%.

But it is questionable, no? I'm just trying to figure out why they never became a tier 1 band a la Maiden, Priest, Metallica etc. They've been around long enough -- "Battle Hymns" came out before Bruce even joined Maiden.

There are people that love Maiden, Priest, and heck, even Bathory, but yet cannot stomach Manowar. I don't think anyone would dispute the "black cloud" that hovers over them, a definite stigma if you will.

I think it has something to do with Manowar being made out of steel, not clay. Though I could be wrong.:loco:

Although most people don't really care about lyrics, Manowar's are so over the top, I imagine it turns some people off. Add in their "Death to False Metal" chants, and it can be a bit much to take.
