If anyone else has a Pre 73, definitely look into swapping the factory transformer out for a Carnhill. Amazing. That thin top and crappy distortion you get from driving it too hard disappears. It's a lot smoother. I found a guy who sells one that you can just plug right in for $85, takes about 10 minutes.

Anyone else use this pre? Anyone else modded theirs? Thoughts?

I can see this doing cool things but I can also see it making the preamp kind of stuffy and not as tight, much like I found my SCA N72 (Neve 72 clone with Carnhill transformers) to be.

...something that might be great for some sources, like female vocals, horns :D

Really? Interesting. I really liked putting a snare through it before so I'm looking forward to seeing how that goes now. I guess it's a matter of what kind of sound you're looking for. Adding a Carnhill should get you closer to that Neve sound, which for me isn't a bad thing. More color available is always nice, especially really expensive-sounding color. :-D

Anyway, if anyone's looking to do this I can PM them the email address of the guy to contact.
