Get this bass tone without a real bass?

I don't own a real bass, and I need to put some bass guitars in my songs (I'm a one man band). Are there any VSTs that sound like this?

You could probably do something similar with Trilian, not sure if there's a model that sounds exactly like it but the Hardcore model is pretty sweet.

I know it's probably not what you want to hear but you should just get a cheap bass, it will sound better than a lot of VSTs and will be easier than programming assuming your a guitarist. It will be good to have in the long run.

It would probably be cheaper than Trilian, too.

trillian or cheap bass, like a harley benton or something, maybe putting some nice p'ups in it if you're not satisfied, and make sure you have brand new strings to record. In the end, it'll probably cost the same as Trillian, so you have to decide wether you prefer to go through programming (which isn't easy to make it sound decent cause of all the nuances of a real player) or playing the bass, if you're a tight enough guitarist it shouldn't be too difficult to get the hang of recording bass

Or just pitch shift your guitar with some high quality plugin or in REAPER with Elastique 2 Pro algorithm.

I believe this techique is called "ghetto bass" around these parts.

Pitch shifting will sound way worse than a real bass, only do it if you can't borrow or buy a cheap bass or something.

Thanks guys, so I have decided I'll buy a cheap bass. But I don't know much about bass guitars, like what pick ups are good etc.. I'm on a budget of maybe $250-$400(CAD) max. so, anyone could suggest a descent 4-5 string bass i could get for that much possibly? I'm only 16 and have no job so

Is there a program to convert dry DI guitar track to midi, with all velocities (not like Variaudio from Cubase, which converts all notes with the same velocity, as far as I know)? So that after that I could transpose it one octave lower and use some of those bass vsti-s?

Have a look on craigslist/kijiji. Where are you in Canada? I see decent cheap basses for sale on the local classifieds way more frequently than decent guitars (at least where I am).

I was in the same situation as yourself a few years back. I was patient, and found an Ibby SRX505 for $250 in good shape with case, which is more than decent for recording bass.

Just keep a lookout for used stuff. $250-400 will get you a far better bass used than new..

melodyne (all versions except the essential version) has an audio to midi converter, don't know how it handles velocity. try the editor demo.

I've experienced amazing midi humanization features in Pro Tools and Cubase.
What's up with the cheap bass thing? :P D'Addario Pro Steels (for every 3-4 songs) + EMG DC 40 (neck + bridge) wouldn't make it a 'cheap bass' anyway.
And cheap basses, are... well... cheap.
And cheap sucks!

Cheap does not always equal suck... There are plenty of cheap ESP and Ibanez basses that do not suck.
