Getting that Warping Effect

Does any one know the correct way to achieve that warping effect that normally fades into a song.

For example at the start of the song "What a horrible night" http://www.myspace.com/blackdahliamurder.

something tells me its a basic method and I'll kick myself for not figuring it out.

sounds like an automated fade in with a slow flanger and extreme shelving

Resonant low pass filter sweep.

A similar effect that I do like is done with an automated EQ.
Get a highpass, cutting lots of low-mids as well and a lowpass that removes lot of high mids (the good old phone-filter).
Automate the frequency controls and open up until there are no more cuts...
I love it - just don't use it to often, otherwise it might get boring.
