I wanted to know right...

I been mixing lately and I a/b stuff as I am sure we all do, when I A/b against most metal I get blown away.

Now Limiting cannot be the asnwer cos for as far as I can limit I cannot get stuff to sound loud.

Nw I know volume to our ears comes from 3k region, but nobody boosts around 3k on all their guitars do they.

don't get me wrong here this aint a loudness war issue, clarity seems to come somewhat from this.

Again I refer you to any of Katatonias latest works to see what I mean.

Oh for crying out loud. I go away for a while, taking a break because I've gotten tired of things here lately...and I come back to find someone asking this same, worn out question?

Do you see what 1 minute of searching can turn up?

Now, I know that means you actually have to READ THROUGH it. Heaven forbid.

Don't be lazy, and SEARCH for yourself next time. *grumble grumble*

Great playing, great sound sources, great mixing, godly mastering. That's how it's done.

Try messing around with multiband compression on the master bus, it could make it better or a lot worse depending on how you use it.

Hahahahhaha, welcome back Mr. Sunshine :D But yeah, there have been a staggering amount of threads on the topic of loudness and levels

Why do you poeple want your mixes to sound as loud as the horrible distorted and phasy productions we hear on radio?

Yes most people do want their mixes to sound like what they hear on the radio because that is the standard. Please name a "radio quality" mix that has phase issues, I'd love to hear it, and not all radio quality mixes are mastered so loud that they distort

Also, OP: 2k-3.15k in guitars is a super harsh frequency, don't boost that unless you want people's ears to bleed from the piercing noise

Hmm interesting, I find that frequency region really makes the pick attack harsh, but the real ear bleeding frequencies of guitars seems to live around 6.5.7.5KHz

It depends on the tone of course (and the mic), but those can be equally harsh. Really too much of anything in that region (2k-6.3k) can be an ear gouger if you're not careful

Next tutorial : Getting the bitch you're in bed with to really scream and not just moan

I think sometimes there is possibly a loss in translation or maybe not, although I would hope not.

Ive edited this as I wasn't sure if I can post youtube stuff...

Anyway I thought I would upload a clip

I'm actually digging the music... I think your problem is with the individual instrument tones...

But you know what? It doesn't sound bad, reminds me of old Soundgarden stuff (musically)... could use some tuning on some of the vocal parts... the guitar tone, IMO, could be smoother... less gritty... the bass could be less clicky... all these things are personal preference of course...

Upper-mids, if boosted/out of control, have a tendency to also mask instruments and especially vocals. Too much upper-mids in everything, and you have "mid-band" going through the stereofield. This leads easily to ear-fatigue when listening back and makes the mix sound "strung-out", you know?

Likewise, too much low-mids makes the mix sound stuffy and muddy (hence, "mud-frequencies"). Too little, and the mix sounds scooped and upper-mids are more prominent.

It's about balances, and getting those balances "right" takes practice, experience (ie., time) and a good listening environment. And of course good sources (player, instrument, mic, etc..).

Thanks I really appreciate the comments, I know its a never ending circle of improvements I just do what I can as I go along, but its really encouraging to hear some good feedback and thats probably the most helpful bit.

I often worry about the guitar sounding flat, not cutting through enough this leads me to pushing it up and then ... the grit hits, either as an EQ boost going crazy or the guitar too loud..

Whats best to smooth a guitar tone? I admit im using Logics guitar emulation, should I EQ the amp more or their something else worth looking at?

does the cutting come more from mastering the whole track, I often find theres something that helps push a guitar out, yet the full bodyness remains

I found a solution, I did back of the bass (I had 2 bass one for click, i found it worked if it wasnt obvious)

I cut a load aroun 2k, and boost somewhere above that which I found nice, its not cured my issue 100% but what it shows me is how creative you can get with eq on guitars and acheive good results

Like the song. Good balance in my opinion.
I think the drums could change slightly as it sounds like the same loop the whole song, I'm guessing it is.
Cool tune :)
