Glassjaw

Oh shit. I think I'm the only one that likes them here but hey. Sometimes the emo punk vocals piss me off but I listened to them for like 2 years now.

Glassjaw are an awesome band, Worship and Tribute blew me away last year. Even when they mellow out and sound a little like Incubus, Daryl Palumbo's vocals still inspire me. They have so much emotion to their music that it makes any shortcomings they might have moot.

The thing that draws me away from them is his vocals. Sometimes he can do okay, but when he sounds all whiney it reminds me of Saves the Day:err:

I think their music is quite good, and at times superb. I find it difficult to appreciate Palumbo's voice however, not really because it's annoying (which is what most people would think I imagine) but because it's waaayyy too contrived. Sure, he's trying to make it sound all emotional and deep, but it's just an act, and that spoils the music somewhat. Worse than that, I think his lyrics are far from the beautiful poetry it's touted to be, and are rather just immature and dressed-up tales of angst and idiotic mysogyny.

ScupltedCold - you're probably right in as far as the lyrics on the first album go... but Daryl Palumbo himself has said in interviews that he really wanted to distance himself from the things he said on that album. Apparently, he had just been fucked around by a girlfriend while writing that album, and that coupled with the physical discomfort caused by his Crohn's Disease led to a lot of misdirected anger coming out through the lyrics. Apparently the lyrical focus on Worship And Tribute is a lot more positive.

Anyway, my take on the band - the vocals really work for me, but I prefer their heavier moments to tracks like 'Ape Dos Mil'...

Their 1st album EYEWTKAS (short form) is much better than Worship & Tribute man. Yeah Finch do sound a lot like Glassjaw but not the rest of those bands you mentioned. I hate The Used and Thursday so much. People are saying Emo will replace nu-metal soon... Any of you agree?

I reckon the nu-metal trend has pretty much died a death now... people's attention has splintered, and now everyone's going mad over either lo-fi garage rock bands like the Yeah Yeah Yeahs, The Hives, The White Stripes etcetera, or the emo/hardcore bands like Finch, Thursday, Glassjaw, Funeral For A Friend, and so on.

I'm not really bothered - when I'm in the mood for it, I actually quite like emo music - whether in it's heavier form as in Funeral For A Friend, or more traditional emo like Dashboard Confessional.

Can't bloody stand that lo-fi garage rock stuff, though... *shudders*

Emo pisses me off and must be destroyed. How dare one group of musicians label themselves and bands like them only, "emotional" thus excluding the whole rest of the music out there as being emotional. Having said that, combined with that commercial, contrived sounding feeling, vocals that utterly suck, and boring music for the most part (although at least the guitarists are usually better then the nu-metal guitarists) I sure hope it doesn't become the next huge thing or whatever.

And I can't stand the new "rock and roll" garage band BS.

Sticking to the topic, Glassjaw is tolerable for me but not much more really..

I agree with Orion Crystal Ice. All music is emotion, one way or the other. Some music (the better kind) display emotion through musicianship and musical styles, not overly-contrived, cry me a river lyrics.

this is my friend dan posting -

Good day to you all. i have noticed you are talking about emo and i have to say you are all completely wrong. You have no idea.

Dashboard Confes, Funeral for a friend, saves the day are no more emo than limp bizkit are metal. THey are bollocks pops music. Emo is just another form of hardcore and not just whining about girls and being lonely. A lot of real emo bands sing about a whole number of different topics so there.

Now here are some real emo bands.

Lets start at the beginning...

Rites Of Spring
Embrace (not the indie band, the DC hardcore band from the 80s featuring Ian Mackaye from Minor Threat/Fugazi)

These were the first few. They kinda started them off. Then some bands such as Frail, Moss Icon, Hoover and so on appeared. They kinda yell and scream a lot and are the most emo bands ever. I suggest you check them out. Indian Summer are another essential band - http://host.bip.net/730472/indiansummer.html

You get your screamy stuff (Screamo)

Frail
Shotmaker

Still Life

You get your nice pleasant indie-emo stuff. This is really just indie and many emo purists dont regard it as emo although it has an obvious emo influence.

Boys Life
Christie Front Drive http://www.christiefrontdrive.com/
The Pine http://www.geocities.com/thepinepage/
Evergreen

You get your dancy San Diego stuff

Swing Kids
Clikatat Ikatowi

Basically emo is geeks trying to yell and look hard. It has a lot of yelling and screaming and a lot of melody. It is very good and i recommend you check some of it out.

BTW GLASSJAW ARE POSSIBLY THE BIGGEST PILE OF WANK EVER. THE USED, FINCH, THURSDAY, GET UP KIDS, FUNERAL FOR A FRIEND, SAVES THE DAY ARE NOT EMO/SCREAMO OR REAL HARDCORE.
