Glassjaw

soilent goat if you think glassjaw, finch, thursday, funeral for a friend, dashboard confessional, get up kids, saves the day, the used etc... are hardcore and metalcore you are very much mistaken, therefore we are not ripping into hardcore and metalcore

Emo is NOT referring to the fact that it is more emotional music. Emo was a derogatory term created to insult the more emotional style of hardcore that Rites of Spring created.

Thursday are INDEED an emo band, they are very much hardcore. If I had to compare them to anyone, it would be Boy Sets Fire, but they also have a huge and obvious influence from bands like Fugazi.

Glassjaw and Finch have emo influences, but I would put them into their own style of music which is a combination of nu metal and emo. 36 Crazyfists would probably fit in as well.

Without a doubt, the best emo band (or band to play emo songs) ever was At the Drive-In, who were devastatingly original and awesome.

Dan: Emo is indeed a dumb name for the music. It is all just hardcore. I guess it just makes it easier to label.

Now....Thursday cannot be called emo or hardcore. They may have slight influences but they arent real. They are on a major (Victory Records are owned by some major label.) I cant be arsed to discuss thursday. If you listen to some real emo and listen to thursday, its obvious that theyre just some poppier generic garbage band trying to rip off true hardcore/emo in order to make lotsa money. The cocks.

I listen to real emo (like Joshua Fit for Battle) quite often and I think Thursday are by far one of the best bands in the scene. They have a very obvious hardcore sound, and they fit quite well in the punk scene (emo is a style of hardcore which is a style of punk, so don't give me any shit about Thursday not being punk). They have amazing lyrics, perfect production, and quite excellent musicianship.

Dan strikes back with another well thought out and easy to understand post! Give him my regards!:hotjump:

Again this is from dan...

how can you listen to such a great band as jffb and still think thursday are emo. they dont sound emo at all. they sound like a poor version of a melodic hardcore band too me.

FailingAcension: are you being sarcastic

Ok back to me now (gareth), yeah dan's sceptical when it comes to praise

Okay Dan, my post was exaggerating a little, but actually all that you've said has been true and well thought out. :) I am not being mean, if thats what you're thinking.

I think that emo has changed since it was created, in the same way that industrial has changed. If you go by the pure definition, industrial music is music created with machines in a very post punk manner, similar to bands like Throbbing Gristle, Cabaret Voltaire, and Einsturzende Neubauten. But of course, nowadays, you have bands like :Wumpscut:, Front Line Assembly, KMFDM, and even NIN (I don't think NIN are industrial at all) being described as industrial, and the vast majority of the populace uses this term to describe this style of music. Emo had a similar change. Bands like Sunny Day Real Estate are almost always referred to as emo, yet I don't hear much if any hardcore in their sound other than their very earliest material. In that way, I think that Thursday fit quite well into the emo category as they have much more hardcore in their sound than Sunny Day Real Estate or other bands in that ilk. Yes, Thursday's lyrics on Full Collapse deal equally with political issues as they do with emotional issues, but the emotional vibe still registers with me prominently. Their debut album, Waiting, has even more of the emo feel to me as it quite heavily reminds me of Sunny Day Real Estate's first album Diary. Maybe the more simplistic pop sound of Thursday makes them more easily digestible for me, and I can listen to them in more situations than the "emo-violence" (gayest term ever) of bands like JFFB. I don't know... but Thursday are a very sweet band to me. I don't care about popularity contests or if a band is on a major or not, I think their music sounds good and that is enough for me.

Man do I hate these truckloads of garage bands like the White Stripes coming out these days. All these emo punk bands are so bitchy and annoying (I like Glassjaw but they are pretty bitchy if you know what I mean0. Someone mentioned 36 Crazy Fists here, I think they're pretty good.

The only mainstream music i enjoy is Nirvana and Tool.
Opeth is soon to be mainstream aswell..
And the new Deftones video is okey. They should not be called nu metal.

divine_intent, do you like in flames and soilwork as well? if so they're pretty darn mainstream now as well, tossers and also the haunted are getting quite mainstream, all the aformentioned bands are constantly being featured in shit kiddy mosher commercial whore poser magazines like kerrang and metal hammer, well over here anyway

Yah, I hate the garage movement of bands like The White Stripes and The Strokes as well. Some of those retro bands are decent, like The Soundtrack of Our Lives or Interpol, but they aren't retro in the same manner, more like 70's rock and 80's new wave respectively. But man, this retro shit is getting me so tired. The electronic scene is undergoing a very similar movement with electroclash.... and I hate it too. Push things forwards, not backwards!! Gahhh...

It's fashionable to be retro now, all the fashion over here is all fucking 70's worn jeans and retro t-shirts and shit, its gay. All these crappy bands like The Datsuns, The White Stripes, The Libertines, The Strokes, The Yeah Yeah Yeah's etc... just hopping on the fashionable bandwagon, the thing is what annoys me is that The Datsuns keep being compared to Black Sabbath which i think is a disgrace
