What would really help the automakers would be a national health care system that takes their massive health care expenses off their books.

Sounds like a great idea. Derail our already bad economy to assist a portion of it that isn't super productive with a nebulously described plan.

Sorry to derail the thread though. :p

That, and less reluctance to build hybrid cars.

They've been digging their graves for a long time by dragging their feet on this one.

Yeah, when you fight the laws of economics hard enough regarding wages, it will come back to hurt the bottom line. They could easily find people to do those jobs at around half the cost.

There are also way too many executive and management level positions that pay way too much.

They need to figure out a way to make cars more cheaply and sell them more cheaply. Substantially so. If they undercut Japanese cars by about $1-2K, they could take a bite out of Honda and Toyota. For too long they've guessed that people will choose the American car if presented equally priced US and Japanese cars.

Which is what GM is doing

I agree. The pay structure for executives needs to be overhauled. It needs to be more performance based. However, there are drawbacks to that as well, but a compromise can be made somehow.

This is exactly what would happen (given the laws of supply and demand). They might be able to do it by cutting back on wages they are offering to the new workers. I don't know though.
