I don't think it has necessarily something to do with "getting" the theme and tongue-in-cheek humour of it, not exclusively at least (it is a contributing factor). I personally think those high guitar/synth harmonies constantly throughout the song are a bit too much, the vocals are an acquired taste and pace/arrangement isn't very exciting.
It's certainly not outright bad and I've heard worse but it also doesn't make we want to spread the word about it or to repeatedly listen to it.
Combining humour and music at the same level of quality is a bitch and only very few bands pull it off. Devin can do it, but he's unreal. Many other acts get stigmatized as clowns and the actual music falls off the wagon.
