Hey guys, I can't make a sampled hi hat sound real in any way, it just sounds like garbage every single time, clunky and not very sustainy. I've just been using the ones in Erkins sorted samples, plus Aptrigga2. Any hints/better samples?
well dude
think about it
what characteristics make a hat sound dry and fake?
the lack of crisp highs, no sustain, noo much low frequency.
use a transient, eq all that nasty shit, do a little boosting, not alot though, try more cutting, and ad some saturation to tame some wild spikes and then.. compress..
if it doesnt work for you, then perhaps your not trying hard enough
and this also applies to not using a complete fucking shitty ass hat sample.
Nah, I'd say it's more the fact that if you only have a couple of different hit-samples, you get the epic drum machine effect, and no saturation/compressing/eq'ing is gonna fix that (sadly, it would pretty cool if it could )

The hihats are probably the most dynamic piece on the entire drum kit. Getting them to sound real requires a shitload of programming, a lot of good velocity layers, and some nice high quality samples. Compresson, saturation, and EQ are going to change the character of the sound, but not the sound itself. Superior 2 has awesome hihats, and is probably the best way to get real sounding hats without actually playing and micing a set.
